Meet Trailblazer Heather Coopersmith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Coopersmith.

Heather, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I graduated college with a degree in Psychology and really didn’t wish to go back to school to move farther along in this field. But, I had always been interested in the creative arts and loved dancing, acting, and makeup! So, I decided to go to Makeup School and ended up absolutely loving it. I have now been a makeup artist for over 2 decades while in between substitute teaching, trying to invent an app and becoming a blogger for a lash company which I still do.

I started out doing low budget films, worked my way into doing headshots when they were done with non-digital cameras, have worked in production for VH1, A&E, MTV etc., and have always loved doing weddings. I have my Makeup the Bride and For Reel Makeup business names to cover it all.

I am a freelance makeup artist so it goes without saying that it’s not the easiest route to take and some weeks are better than others but I LOVE what I do immensely, so whenever I have a moment of doubt, the universe sends me a sign that says CHILLAX, your makeup woes will soon be gone. Honestly, every time it turns around and BOOM, jobs come my way! I feel that the most important part of my job probably has a lot of phycology behind it because connecting with people and making them feel and look good is a gift! The biggest form of flattery is when someone is referred to me by a past client or bride of mine. I want everyone who is in my chair to feel special and that they can trust me! I listen and want to enhance their features to the best of my ability. Today… I am still working with comics, brides, models, and actors that make my world go around. Just feel very good about my creative voice and my work ethic at this point in my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been up and down for sure. When you start out in this biz, it’s hard to know right away what makeup genre you want to concentrate in so it’s best to dabble and see what sticks. If you know right out of the gate that you want to be at weddings, then put your energy and focus into connecting with people in that industry. Same goes for any other genre. Prepare to work for free for a bit to get the experience under your belt to then be able to present yourself professionally. Get to know your abilities and the expectations of others. Being creative and wanting it to be your bread and butter is challenging… so ask questions, listen, and jump at learning opportunities that are given to you. You never know who may notice and what door may open for you. Just keep that in mind. When you love what you do, have fun at what you do and know what is expected of you… others will want to be around that energy!

We’d love to hear more about Makeup the Bride and For Reel Makeup.
I have always done weddings. My bridal work is what I specialize in because it really is my own business entity. What sets me apart from others is that I create a great experience from beginning to end with my brides. I make sure to give them what they want and customize each look accordingly. Not only that but I have fun and love what I do so that comes through in every ounce of energy that I put into it. Makeup isn’t brain surgery! On the business end of things… I know through and through with confidence how to organize a wedding. Makeup the Bride alleviates so much stress for brides because I schedule and have everything in order so there are no surprises. On the day of… it’s a calm, cool, exciting and fun day because all of the other details are taken care of. It’s just makeup time!

In the production category… I feel like what sets me apart is that I am good at what I do, I am loyal and I know how to acclimate my skills in a production environment. I have also been asked to be a personal makeup artist for a comic that I have been working with for over a decade and that doesn’t just happen. I am responsible, professional, and consistently giving my all no matter what the production is. Again, I love what I do so I am also humble, thankful and gracious which is also helpful!

Which women have inspired you in your life? Why?
What an intense question! I think every woman inspires me to some degree! Individuality, creativeness, realness, happiness, being fun and funny… all of these traits and more inspire the hell out of me. Women like Monika Blunder and Sian Richards are creatively some of the makeup icons that I look up to. Their perspectives and creative voices are lovely as well as their personalities. They are down to earth and extremely talented as well as savvy brands. I aspire to be like them!
