Today we’d like to introduce you to Simon Cardoza.
Simon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Since I was a kid, I’ve been taking photos, it started with disposable cameras in junior high and high school, I still remember winding up my first film rolls with a manual camera and that one roll I didn’t wind up right, moments never really captured. Experiences like that pushed me to learn more about photography and the aspects of it. After attending college for photography, I began blending it with my love of music by directing music videos for some of my favorite Los Angeles indie bands. Along the way shooting rock concerts and festivals for magazines and webzines. Through the years I’ve focused in fashion, editorial & promotional photographs, working with people as my subjects. It’s always been a wonderful challenge attempting to capture the right moment. Being open to new challenges, lately I’ve found myself shooting artwork for print reproduction, interior and product photography. I tell people every day I’m behind the lens is a good day!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s no secret a lot of people think they are a good photographer, so it becomes a profession that can become very cutthroat with a decreasing value. It’s a daunting task going out there and selling your talent and work to new clients. It is definitely rewarding but to be a known commodity takes time and practice, telling yourself you ‘you are what you achieve to be’ while having to take on other means of income to keep pursuing your dreams is an all too familiar refrain living in Los Angeles. The world isn’t always pointing you in the direction you want to go, when it is you try to hold on to that feeling and when it’s not, you just try to hold on.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Simon Cardoza Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
Simon Cardoza Photography is the world through my vision. How I would like others to perceive the world around them and how I see someone perceiving themselves. Though photos are taken now more than ever, people are very keen to how they want to be seen out there in the world so capturing that right angle, that perfect pose is a key element to my approach towards the photos I take. I’m open to most photo projects presented to me but I’ve found returning clients in editorial portraiture, product photography and art reproduction.
Directing and editing videos, be it musical or promotional has always been a stable of my career as well.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck happens to those who put themselves out there, I’ve found when pursuing new ideas and situations, I run into luck quite often.
