Meet Neddy Rodriguez of Awaken- Skincare by Neddy in Marina Del Rey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neddy Rodriguez.

Neddy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started out as a Make-up 12 years ago. It was working on set, using various mediums and products; from cosmetics to paint, to latex on faces, that’s how my journey with skin began. Often, the actors or models after a long day of shooting would ask for suggestions on how to care for their skin. I found that I was pretty clueless about skincare. It took a while, but I realized that I wanted to go to esthetics school to learn more about skincare so that I might be a more well-rounded makeup artist. Once I went to school, merely for education sake, (I had NO intention of working as an esthetician) I fell in love with skincare and facials! The rest is history.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t necessarily been a smooth road. But I find that when following one’s intuition/dream it rarely is. I started out in a small room at a neighborhood salon. In the beginning, I was juggling my newfound private practice, while working at two other spas simultaneously. It really took “getting out of my own way”, embracing my worth and trusting my skill to realize I had something of value to offer. After I owned that conviction, that’s the moment others stepped out in faith to encourage and support me.

Being a small business owner can be challenging. But for me, there is just this intrinsic beauty and validation that comes from seeing your dreams become a reality bit by bit. It’s definitely a special feeling.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am an Esthetician specializing in Organic Skincare. I am known for my facials; they are “anti-fluff”. There is this misconception that facials are: “fluffy, steam and cream, massage filled treats”, that you do on your birthday or give your mom for Mother’s Day. Although a facial can very well be gentle and relaxing, that’s not the purpose of a facial, it’s the perk. My facials are detailed and meticulous. I’m getting in there and doing what needs to be done in order to make my clients look and feel their best. I often tell my clients: “You don’t pay me to gently wash your face; you can do that on your own. You come here, to have me get what you can’t out.” That means extractions and exfoliation. But don’t get me wrong, I still incorporate the relaxing perks, it’s a well-balanced facial. Skin is the largest organ of the body; facials are less about luxury and more about hygiene. Wellness to me is feeding your body what it needs, which is why I choose Organic products. I never take for granted the honor it is to care for my client’s skin. It’s a very intimate and vulnerable thing, you don’t just trust your face with anyone. So I really put my best into what I do, and try to convey that in every treatment. My facials are tailored to each client’s skin condition on that given day; meaning all facials are my customized. I have no “signature facials” simply because everyone is different.

What were you like growing up?
I was a curious social butterfly. Not shy in the least. Very talkative. An old soul for sure.

Neddy is an amazing esthetician but I am truly in love with her latest development – celebrating conscious women! Her videos are fun and informative! http://www.mindfuleve.com
