Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin O.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Justin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
EMX organizes the NoHo ArtWalk once a month for the last 2 years on the 2nd Saturday.
EMX started as a platform to assist upcoming DJs, Producers, & Vocalists to have a place to perform with a weekly electronic music open night to showcase local undiscovered talent.
The popularity grew of EMX events in just one year, and we then took the opportunity to partner on the beginnings of the NoHo ArtWalk with help from the Electronic Music Alliance (headed by former North Hollywood Neighborhood Council-member Janine Jordan.
EMX eventually took over management & production of the NoHo ArtWalk, and with the help of the city of North Hollywood & Sean Sandoval (Production Manager for Coachella, Stage Coach, & EDC) we secured a grant from the Department of Cultural Affairs & Community Partners for expansion.
May, June, & July of 2018 we are bringing together various local collectives of performing artists & visual artists to expand from the NoHo Plaza to a second stage at the Art Institute of CA.
ActivateLA, TooDopeBreakers, & Scratch DJ Academy helps to host the Only Da Fresh Dance Battle (all-ages) from May-July in the NoHo Plaza. 20 local visual artists line the walk-way showcasing their talent. Our partners include VegansOfLA, Vegan Outreach, Vegan Street Fair, & local radio station KCRW.
About one block away at the Art Institute of CA – Noise Revolt, Space Brains, & 20 more local visual artists create an Art Battle & audio-visual extravaganza of colors, shapes, & sounds to highlight the local talent that North Hollywood & it’s surrounding area breeds.
In August, EMX & its partners build to a climactic conclusion of the Summer as we introduce the first NoHo Block Party where we will actually close down Lankershim with the help of the City of North Hollywood & it’s partners.
We are looking to find sponsors and other ways to generate revenue so that we can continue expanding the NoHo ArtWalk after the grant runs out in August.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The path has been so smooth due to the leadership of the NoHo BID & Councilmember Krekorian’s office. The only challenge that we face is creating revenue streams and finding sponsors to keep the 2 stages alive after August.
All of the participants & partners of the NoHo ArtWalk are incredible & have created an artistic community that truly supports & provides resources for each other.
Leaders on our NoHo ArtWalk Visual Artist roster like Chill Factor & Xanthia Pink have volunteered their time to ensure that every participant & attendee is welcomed and included.
NoHo ArtWalk & EMX – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
EMX has over 24 monthly events providing support & resources for the electronic music industry. We have booked over 1,000 performers in 3 years at our monthly events in LA & OC. Featured venues include Avalon (Hollywood), Station1640 (Hollywood), The Lexington (DTLA), Kitsch Bar (Costa Mesa), & our one of a kind EMX Yacht Parties (Newport Beach).
EMX offers yacht party bookings for upcoming DJs in LA & OC, and special events on our 80 person yacht. If you are interested in partnering or organizing a yacht party please e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
