Meet Jose Bahena of Bahena Home + Studio in Glendale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jose Bahena.

Jose, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My wife and I were in need of functional furniture for our small space. We spent a lot of time looking for simple furniture within our budget and came up short every time. We decided to try and build some pieces ourselves. With two full-time jobs, these projects were only a weekend hobby. Neither one of us has a background in designing or building furniture but somehow here we are. All of our furniture pieces are made to order and carefully handcrafted by us from beginning to end in our small home studio. We don’t have a fancy workshop or design space with lots of employees – It’s just us two. We cut, weld, sand, stain, and hand assemble everything ourselves.

Earlier this year when the quarantine began, like many, we found ourselves spending a lot of time at home. We started playing with the idea of using our leftover wood in our shop to making some wooden toys for our one year old son. We got such a great response from our friends. The wooden toys became an organic extension of our furniture collection.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We were making furniture because we enjoyed it. But once we decided to officially make the transition into a small business, we were in over our heads. We found ourselves overwhelmed with the business paperwork & all that comes with it. Luckily, we feel like we’ve gotten over the hill and navigated the initial start-up as best we could. But we can see why so many people get discouraged and turn away.

Bahena Home + Studio –  what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in handmade minimal furniture. Metal frames with wooden table tops. All of our furniture is made to order and can be customized to fit your needs. As a company, we’re most proud of being able to offer quality pieces at attainable prices. We’re not mass producing anything, we believe quality over quantity is more important. We hope to reduce waste in our landfills by offering our customers long-lasting quality goods they can feel good about.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being 12 years old in my father’s shop, always watching him work. Being allowed to play with his tools as a kid led me to gain the skills I know and use today.
