Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Rose Kling.
Jillian Rose, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Photography has always been a fun hobby for me but never did I ever think I would own my own business, let alone one in photography. School was never my favorite so when I graduated high school, I attended a few junior colleges and universities searching for my calling. Finally, after 3 major changes, I stumbled upon photojournalism and never looked back! I got my degree and now earn a living documenting love stories! It’s pretty wild.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting and running your own business is no walk in the park. Sometimes I wonder if I am cut out for it. Then I remember the alternative and that’s even more scary. I’ve worked full-time in corporate jobs since I was a teenager and I always day dreamed about being able to make my own hours.
I’ve worked at some pretty amazing companies but would always crave doing things on my own terms. You know, like enjoying a coffee and good book at the Malibu Starbucks at 11am on a random Tuesday if I wanted.
Starting a business is difficult enough but to keep it afloat is a whole other challenge.
For example, just as I was gaining momentum and getting my name out there I had a baby.
I found it hard to keep up with the wedding industry events while adjusting to being a new mom. Priorities shifted and I struggled with feelings of guilt when having to choose between my work (which also happens to be my passion) and my growing family.
Then, when I felt like I gained some control, I had my second baby!!! I love my kids dearly but it changes everything. The ebbs and flows are crazy but it keeps you on your toes, wanting to learn and grow and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Jillian Rose Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Born and raised in Sunny SoCal, I am a documentary film and digital photographer specializing in weddings and lifestyle portrait sessions.
I’m most proud of being able to make my dream of owning my business come to fruition but also to really, truly, deeply love what I do. I’m a curious (ok, nosey) person by nature and utterly nostalgic so this career is an absolute dream!
My curiosity and desire to really get to know people makes it so I get super intimate and comfortable with my clients. I’ve been told that I have a way of making even the most camera shy and awkward person feel open and comfortable in front of the lens.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The definition of success changes for me quite often. Almost daily sometimes! It could be anything from the number of weddings I book each year, to the vendors I get to work with, venues I shoot at, places I travel or even a particular style of bride I book.
I find that when I create smaller goals and obtain them I constantly feel the drive to succeed and create new goals. It keeps me motivated, excited and satisfied.
