Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Nakata.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Growing up I loved decorating my dollhouse by cutting out patterned paper to use as Wallcoverings and scraps of fabric as rugs. At the time, I didn’t realize there was a professional that existed which would allow you to be creative in this way. One day while in a general education class in college, a fellow student told me she was majoring in an interior Design and it’s as if something just clicked. I changed my major that day and the rest is history. I moved to La after college and learned a lot by working for two successful Designers. I decided it was time to pursue Interior Design on my own. I opened up a retail store, The Black Door as well as began my firm working on high end residential projects. I decided after 3 years that I couldn’t give 100 percent to the store as well as my clients and decided to devote my time and the firm to working with clients only.
Please tell us about your art.
I am always honored that a client trusts me to work with them on what can be a most personal project. I listen to the design desires of my clients and explain to them that I am putting their wants and needs for their home thru the “Jessica” Siv. What comes out is a blend; my interpretation of what they are trying to express with their home and the way in which they want to live. I hope that clients feel comfortable and excited every time they walk into and spend time in a room I have helped to create.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
I am often invited to events at which I could meet other designs but often am working on a project or have to budget my time and can’t attend. I do often wish I had contemporary in the field to share tips, stories and sources with.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I have regularly been on HGTV’s “House Hunters Renovation” which is always a fun project to work on. My website (www.TheBlkDoor) is the best way to get a sense of my aesthetic not only by looking at the online portfolio but the traditional yet clean design of the site itself. Additionally, I always have fun posting projects and other tid bits on Instagram (Jessicanakata_theblackdoor).
