Meet Jennifer Robinson of Fit4Mom in San Pedro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Robinson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jennifer. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I joined FIT4MOM in Maryland as a client when my daughter was only two months old and instantly I was hooked. This was the place for me. I finally found my rhythm as a mom and as a woman. I was able to workout with other moms and my daughter was happily along for the ride in her stroller.

This past summer, my family moved from Maryland to California. As soon as we arrived in California, I joined FIT4MOM Palos Verdes and San Pedro and was excited to hear they were looking for another instructor. I became a certified Stroller Strides instructor in September and bought the local franchise in November. I can honestly say, I have the best job ever. I wake up every morning (Monday – Saturday) and head to a local park for a great workout either taught by one of my instructors or myself. It is inspiring to spend time with moms who not only take time to strengthen their body but also set an incredible example for their children; they show their children that exercise is fun.

But FIT4MOM and Stroller Strides really go beyond exercise. FIT4MOM is a way for moms and their children to grow together through exercise, playgroups, evenings out, and other events. We like to call our group a “Village” because we are here for each other and get to share some incredible experiences. As of now, we are continuing to grow “Our Village.”

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I grew up in Southern California, having recently moved to Los Angeles, one of my biggest challenges is getting the word out to all the moms in Palos Verdes and San Pedro that we are here for them. We have a great core group of moms and their kiddos and we would love to share our experiences with the other great families in our community.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fit4Mom Palos Verdes & San Pedro – what should we know?
FIT4MOM is the nation’s largest fitness program offering instructors trained in both pre and post-natal fitness classes for moms of all fitness levels. At FIT4MOM Palos Verdes and San Pedro, we offer Stroller Strides, a fitness class that gives you a head-to-toe workout in just one hour. During class, we power-walk (or jog) around parks in our community stopping along the way to use resistance bands and other objects in the environment (stairs, benches, etc.) to tone our muscles. Despite the name, anyone who has tried a Stroller Strides class will tell you that it is no “walk in the park.”

What makes FIT4MOM special, is that we incorporate fun activities for our kids throughout the workout. At FIT4MOM Palos Verdes and San Pedro, we sing children’s songs as we exercise and the instructors are often seen reading books, blowing bubbles, or finding other ways to keep the kids entertained.

Being a caregiver for your kids is a tough responsibility and as moms ourselves, the instructors and I understand the importance of having “Mommy and Me” time where we can play and explore new things with our kids as well as “Grown-Up” time where we can bond with other adults without the kids in tow. To help fill that “Mommy and Me” time, FIT4MOM Palos Verdes and San Pedro offers weekly playgroups with crafts, games, or activities after class. And we also coordinate monthly “Mom’s Night Out” activities for moms to get together and relax.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would say there are two characteristics that are critical to what we do: we are a community and we have fun! There are a lot of great places to exercise, but what makes FIT4MOM Palos Verdes and San Pedro so great is that it is all about the moms and their kids. The ultimate goal is to enrich the lives of every member of Our Village by giving them a place where they belong. They can exercise without finding child care, they set an awesome example for their kids, they meet other great moms in their community, and they get to have fun doing it.
