Meet Esther Ellmore of Ellmore Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Ellmore.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Esther. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Originally from London, UK. My (newly-wed at the time) husband and I found ourselves in Sunny So-Cal nine years ago. With not much of a plan but a whole lot of (somewhat naive) passion, we set out getting our roots down deep and establishing ourselves here in LA!

I have always had such an affinity for ‘the table.’ Growing up in a big family it was always the place where we’d find each other again. Moving away from home I found myself naturally gathering people and wanting to make those gathering places pretty. I soon started getting asked if I could lend a hand with baby showers, some flowers for friends weddings, setting the table for a birthday meal or advise on what sofa to buy.

A (very) good friend of mine, observing from afar, candidly pointed out “hey – you’re pretty good at this! You should consider doing it as a job.” And that’s how my first partnership and company ‘Fletcher Ellmore Events’ was born. That very good friend of mine and I dived head first into events in LA. She would oversee production, and I would design the events. It took off – much to our surprise and lack of experience, we found ourselves in spaces and working for people we would never have imagined – it was an amazing four years!

As time went on my business partner and I knew it was time to shake things up! She had just become a mom of two, and I was itching to try new things. Over champagne and paperwork, we dissolved F&E, and I went on a mission of rediscovering what my passions were and where I wanted to take everything I’d learned.

Fast forward six months and ELLMORE DESIGN was launched! I have never felt more passion, ownership, and expectancy! I’m in my lane, and I can feel it! Taking everything I had learned over the years designing events and creating memorable and unique spaces, I was able to transition into interiors (self-taught), prop styling for brands and of course still designing events, like a duck to water.

It was the most fluid and natural progression, and I saw the fruit of it right away. That was about seven months ago now – and it’s been the most rewarding year (In a hard, challenging, uphill and – I ‘m-out-of-my-depth-all-the-time kind of way) but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I am so ready to hustle and get my hands dirty building something that’ll last.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Having missed out on schooling for ALL of the areas, I found myself working in I have had to be a real self-started and drown on the critic in my head. The voice that tells you-you are under-qualified and overrated. I’ve also had to put in the time to learn new skills (yay for you-tube) Staying up late, getting up early and turning down social engagements to put in the extra effort. At times it can feel futile, but those mountaintop moments where you book a client or nail a job make it all so worth it!

I have had to learn the hard way how creative my job really is, and that if I’m not taking time to re-fill the tank, it negatively affects my work. So I self impose days off, put an away message on my email and spend time with friends and do things like walk to get coffee, sleep in and allowing myself not to feel guilty about it! I have to make sure I am focusing on what feeds my soul, keeping check on my spiritual health and my marriage first – the rest will then follow.

This all sounds great in theory, but it takes real disciple as a freelance business owner – I never want to be living under the business – its there to bring joy to myself and others – I need to fight to keep it that way!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
ELLMORE DESIGN is a design company with a special focus on reimagining SPACE. From interior homes to special events, through to prop styling where I make a product feel at home in its surroundings. I coined the phrase ‘creative spatialist’ – as my work isn’t specific to one area, its all about space, which comes in so many forms.

You know that excitement you get when you see a ‘before + after’ picture? – I dream that way! When I walk into a room, an event space or a studio I am already imagining, in vivid detail, the perfect picture of the ‘after.’ I am so passionate about getting the greatest and most beautiful potential out of each space I’m given to work with.

What makes what I do so unique is that it is so personal. Its all about creating spaces that reflect each individual client, speaking to who they are and functioning for what they need. As much as I have my own sense of personal style, I set that down when I meet with clients and focus on what I can do to create something that feels like the greatest expression of them – not me.

It’s so rewarding to see each client respond to my work by feeling so connected to it. Naturally, my flare is seen throughout my work, and I have my signature style that comes through, but the resounding feeling is that each project is as unique and different as each client is.

What were you like growing up?
I am one of five girls so you can only imagine what a party that was. We are all incredibly close and parents – who just celebrated 45 years married – are passionately devoted to this family. I know its unusual and I’m so grateful!

We are a family of chatty creatives. So I grew up fighting for my chance to shine, which encouraged us all to chase after our dreams and reach for the stars. I never thought my stars would be in LA – but here we are!

I was passionate, did I mention chatty? And loved spending time around people, creating something in art class, an avid drama student and English literature fan. I deferred my college placement after falling in love with my now-husband at 17!

We traveled to Australia, and then life took us on an adventure that landed here – so college never happened for me. After being very studious and a high achiever this was a shock to us all, but I knew things would work out!

Everything I have done has been the result of some natural gifting, yes, but really just a lot of hard work, learning from mistakes and trying new things and trusting that God knew what he was doing and had a plan for my life!
