Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Brent and Dr. Tiffany Caplan.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Dr. Tiffany: We met in graduate school where we were both pursuing our careers in the health field. Growing up we were both naturally curious about health and more natural routes. Our interest in functional medicine really sparked when we attended a post-doctoral seminar on functional medicine which opened our eyes to a whole new realm of knowledge. Ironically at that time I was also starting to struggle with my own health issues.
Being under more stress than I had ever dealt with, taking almost 40 units per semester, choosing studying over sleep, poor eating habits from constantly being on the go, I was becoming more and more depressed and brain fogged and it got to the point I had to turn to antidepressant medications to keep going. And for someone that had grown up never taking medications, never being sick, and always very health conscious and more natural minded, I knew there had to be a different approach. So there I was, learning about this new approach and I knew I had to give it a try so I sought out a functional medicine doctor who took the time to really listen and treat me as an individual and figure out the root cause of my depression. I was able to get off the medication, get rid of my brain fog and started to feel like myself again for the first time in years! I truly believe she saved my life and I knew that I had to help others the way she had helped me. And it’s the best feeling in the world being able to do that!
Dr. Brent: Ever since that initial seminar we spent countless hours and weekends taking and studying as many functional medicine courses as we could in addition to our normal course load. We later graduated with our doctor of chiropractic degrees, continued our education to become certified functional medicine practitioners and eventually worked to become board certified in integrative medicine by the American Association of Integrative Medicine. After a few years of clinical experience in the field of functional medicine and seeing the impact we were having on thousands of patients lives, we knew that we wanted to open our own practice dedicated to helping people through this revolutionary field. After getting married on the beach in Santa Barbara we fell in love with Ventura County and knew that we wanted to plant our roots here and start not only our family but also our practice here. We made the big move from LA in 2016 and couldn’t be happier! We now actually consider many of our patient’s part of our extended family. We love our Ventura County community and have already been able to help so many people restore their health.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Dr. Brent: One of the biggest struggles we faced was the fact that even though functional medicine has been around for decades, many people have not heard of it or are not familiar with it. We have found that many people are unware of anything outside the conventional model of healthcare and simply lack enough knowledge or confidence to control what is going on in their own health. Understandably a lot of people blindly put their faith and health in the hands of their healthcare providers and are not happy with the approach or results they are getting.
Dr. Tiffany: We were actually met with a lot of skepticism when we first moved to Ventura since the community hasn’t been exposed to functional medicine. Initially this came not only from our patients but other local doctors. This quickly changed. We have had many patients take their lab tests back to their specialists and show them the results they have achieved and by far the most common response they get over and over is “I don’t know what you are doing, but keep doing it!”. Now many patients we see are not only from referrals of patients that we have helped but many come from their doctors who look to us to help other their other patients. The objective results we get with our patients cannot be denied. People are truly able to reverse their chronic conditions and restore their health for a better future!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Central Coast Center for Integrative Health story. Tell us more about the business.
Dr. Tiffany: We are a local healthcare clinic focused on helping those with chronic conditions to reverse them naturally. It is clearly evident in the research and healthcare trends that chronic disease is an epidemic in this country and our current healthcare model is ill equipped (no pun intended) in dealing with these issues. The World Health Organization has stated that “90% of the conditions present today are not treatable in the standard medical model” -meaning drugs and surgery. Due to lack of time or general know-how, many conventional practitioners are unable to go above or beyond the set standard of care guidelines and are forced to simply help their patients manage their conditions and symptoms with medications without really looking for or trying to fix the underlying reason they have that problem in the first place. Unfortunately, we are in a healthcare crisis and it’s not getting any better. So, it is becoming more and more evident that in order to get different results, we have to do something different!
Dr. Brent: That’s really where functional medicine shines. It allows us to view the individual as a whole and not just a disease or symptom. By identifying and addressing the underlying root causes of dysfunction in the body we are able to support an individual’s physiology to actually reverse the underlying problem and restore normal, healthy function. Functional medicine is true Healthcare and the results we get are remarkable.
Diabetics completely reverse their diabetes and no longer have to rely on medications, autoimmune patients control their symptoms without drugs and are able to halt progression of the disease, patients suffering from gut issues, arthritis, pain, chronic fatigue, brain fog, anxiety and depression, insomnia and many other common aliments are finally able to get their health and their life back, sometimes for the first time in their life! Whether you are struggling to lose weight or are dealing with a whole host of seemingly unrelated health concerns, by seeing you as the individual you are in a functional medicine perspective, we are able to help people achieve those health goals they only dreamed of. Being in this field is truly one of the most rewarding things we could ask for. It’s our passion!
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Dr. Brent: We feel we have been truly blessed to get to the point we are at. I feel very lucky to have gotten the opportunity to meet my lovely wife who is also as passionate about the field of functional medicine as I am. I also feel very lucky to be part of such an amazing community and to have such amazing patients which makes doing what we do so enjoyable and meaningful.
Dr. Tiffany: We really are truly blessed! Besides our luck with finding such a great community to plant our roots in, I personally feel very lucky to have dealt with my past health issues. Without having experienced that, I may not have found my calling for functional medicine and may not be where I am today. Our mutual passion for functional medicine is one of the things that brought us together as a couple as well and I couldn’t ask for a better partner in life or work.
