Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Maples.
Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I began my career as a model/actor and through the years I gradually moved behind the camera until it became my life as well as a full-time job. While assisting in all aspects of the business, I was able to grab knowledge from all depts – styling, makeup/hair, set design etc, which has helped to bring all full circle with my photography/directing career. I’ve been a professional photographer for 17 years.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a great ride full of ups and downs. The biggest struggle throughout my career has been that photography as become marginalized due to the digital age/boom.
Have you ever wanted to stop doing what you do and just start over?
The toughest time of my career was during the recession. I had many regular clients at that time that closed their doors without notice. Most of my fashion designer and commercial clients stopped production. It has taken a few years to get back to where I once was. I remember those days and take nothing for granted.
Let’s change gears – is there any advice you’d like to give?
Shoot everything you can so you can stay working and develop your style of photography. It takes time to build your business so prepare to work hard and have patience.
Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
I’m so excited for the future. I opened my production company Crown Pointe Productions just recently. In addition to my photography, I have evolved my career as a director now. Crown Pointe is focused on commercials and music video.
