Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Sterling.
Heather, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I went to school for painting in 2006 at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) starting in painting then moved to film photography. 2009 I moved back to Houston and started developing my photography style and teaching myself a lot of technique since my training was only in chemical processing. In 2011 I had a Brain aneurysm that put my life on hold for a few years and took away some of my vision. From 2013 to now I have been adjusting to my new style and framing as a newborn photographer inside hospitals. I moved to Los Angeles in 2013 with a group of creatives but now I work in Hollywood at a design/Marketing agency and live in Burbank with my husband who is a creative director.
What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
My photography roots from my education in painting and drawing but I take a lot of my inspiration from fashion, bold and fearless women and the introspection of self. As a pivotal point in my career again I would have to say my brain injury. I had to relearn everything I thought I knew and rearrange a new shooting style that others would understand.
What kind of work do you look forward to most?
My favorite type of client is little babes and the modern young family but what I look forward to shooting is some effortless high-end fashion looks with beautiful spaces and models. Being a Houston transplant I do not have access to the type of team I would need to elevate this type of project.
What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I would focus in on creating a more clear brand and educated myself more on photoshop and the all mighty social media.
