Meet Asgeir Bollason of Strandsel Iceland Photo Tours

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asgeir Bollason.

Asgeir, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I got started with this idea of guiding people through my home country of Iceland many years ago and I thought it would be great to offer tours that would give my travelers insight into what it is to live there, taste the great food and meet the locals. As a working photographer I wanted to offer my knowledge to any that wanted to improve their photography skills while traveling in Iceland. Ever since then, I have been talking with people who like to travel about Iceland and showing them my images from there. It seems to appeal to outdoor adventure hikers to foodies and leisure travelers alike.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I had fairly good idea of how to get this business of the ground but the tech side of things such as SEO of my website and other things was and is hard to do and can be expensive to outsource. Marketing is also harder than I expected, lots of foot soldering and finding great collaborators in order to establish a good relationship.

Strandsel Iceland Photo Tours – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My company ‘Strandsel Iceland Photo Tours’ offers my guest travelers unique insight into the pure and pristine corners of Iceland, I am combining my love for the photo medium with my insight into Iceland’s nature, culture and food.

I named this company Strandsel after my grandfather and great-grandfather’s farm in rural Westfjords, my grandfather was an avid hiker and hiked all over Iceland. I am striving to offer the best personal service to my guest travelers and I am proud of that effort. Being a native Icelander here in Southern California and offering this travel option is what sets me apart.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I would define it as a self-sustainable financial business over long term where not only can I make a living doing this and enjoy it which I do, but my clients are happy with my services that I provide and refer me. Measuring it would be in that referral business and trust both from my actual clients but also from fellow travel tour operators/agencies that would put their trust in me and my operation and vice versa. Building relationship and nurturing them takes time and I look out for people that have passion for their services/product they offer and take great care of their clients.
