Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Moore.
Andrew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Deaf since birth, I have had years of experience being involved in the Deaf and DeafBlind community. I work as a professional Deaf Interpreter, Co-Navigator (for DeafBlind), ASL Instructor, ASL Tutor, ASL Coach, ASL Master, ASL Consultant and advocate. I have a passion in accessibility, communication, and language.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, I’m proud to call LA my hometown! I graduated from California State University Northridge (CSUN) and received dual Bachelor’s degrees in Business Law and Finance with a minor in Marketing. In addition, I studied laws pertaining to the Deaf under the Deaf Studies department.
Ongoing trainings and other means of being active in the field consistently plays a role in my practice to ensure the most current, ethical and accurate approach for my clients.
I love to backpack around the world and I have been to nearly 70 countries. I can attest that no matter where we are, Deaf people are capable of communicating with each other!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a Deaf person, there are communication barriers. Over the years, I’ve gained the ability to advocate myself and others teaching people about the Deaf and DeafBlind community. I’ve come to realize how important communication is and how we can bridge the gap between the hearing world and the Deaf world.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I wear many hats! I work as a Deaf Interpreter, Co-Navigator (for DeafBlind), ASL Teacher/Tutor, ASL Coaching, ASL Consultant and an Advocate for the Deaf and DeafBlind community. I take great pride in my work that I truly understand what being a Deaf person means. I greatly value accessibility, communication and language.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being well-rounded, patient, sensitive, understanding, flexible, easy-going, adaptive and always learning new things.
