Meet Amina Cruz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amina Cruz.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My father was an FBI agent. He lived in Miami and my mother And I lived in Tampa because his job was to dangerous for us to live with him. One visit he left his camera he used for surveillance. I started taking photos and never stopped.

Please tell us about your art.
I photograph everything, especially the different communities I find myself in. I tend to photograph POC who exists outside the dominant culture. My aesthetic grew from a question, “How do I ethically photograph people on the margins?” The thought of brown bodies on the front lines informed my decision to physically meet people where they are.

If I’m photographing people dancing then I’m on the dance floor. If they are in the pit I’m in the pit. Where they put their body I’m putting mine. Photographing communities who are considered other or not represented is fundamentally important to my personal practice and spiritual growth. Growing up I never saw a version of myself on TV, museums or books. Instead of looking to others to tell my story I’m doing it myself.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
The art world today is a mixture of good and bad. I love that Los Angeles has a thriving scene. I believe more people have access to art even if it’s online. I’ve connected with different people throughout the country and world.

The flip side everyone with a camera thinks they are a photographer. I’ve been shooting for 15 years and still work under a master printer. I dedicate much of my time to my craft. I don’t want to discourage anyone… just put in work!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can check my Instagram for the latest show or panels. Portfolio and online store.

People can support me and other artists by showing up to galleries, talks, purchasing work.
