Meet Melissa St. Hilaire of AmericanWitch13 in Sun Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa St. Hilaire.

Melissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up in rural Massachusetts. My grandmother would take me for walks in the forest and tell me if I listened closely I could hear the spirits of the people who lived there before and if I looked hard enough I could see the faeries who lived in the moss. And I did. I heard and saw them. Before I was born, my grandfather would tell anyone who’d listen that he went to Salem and got himself a witch for a wife.

When I was 12, my mum gave me my first tarot deck, the Mythic Tarot (still my favorite cards), and I dove into learning the Celtic Cross spread and reading anyone who would let me. My mum would tell me stories of how my grandmother knew what I was going to look like before I was born, how tea leaves predicted my father, and my dad has told me many times how an angel visited him when he was younger and told him he was going to have a daughter with special abilities. I was a skeptic…it was all vivid imagination.

So I moved to LA to tell stories through scripts, novels, poetry, and, eventually, Instagram. I created @AmericanWitch13, where I started out simply, sharing witchy memes I thought were funny or helpful, then branched out, posting memes, spells, and rituals that I’d written myself, as well as selling my homemade smoke cleanse bundles, offering readings, teaching classes, and hosting séances. And before I could twitch my nose, I went from 400 followers to over 40k! In that time, AmericanWitch13 has become a hub for me to connect with like-minded souls and a sanctuary, a place where we can share ideas and nurture each other, where we are all navigating this magical path together.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My biggest struggle was switching gears from telling supernatural stories to believing them. I still struggle with that some days. The skeptic in me is strong and wants to debunk everything but then there are too many coincidences, too many odd occurrences, too much evidence of something more. I’ve done spells that have worked within a week, or given readings to strangers and known things about them I could never know, or hosted séances where items moved or disembodied knocks occurred.

Please tell us about AmericanWitch13.
My company is AmericanWitch13. It began as simply an Instagram account to share witch themed posts, but it has grown into a hub for all my new age services. I’ve spent years studying witchcraft, psychic development, mediumship, and energy healing. Now I use Instagram as a platform to give back to my community and pass on all the insight I’ve gained, as well as connect with new mentors to continue to learn and hone my skills. I’ve hosted seances (my specialty is Victorian Table Tipping), led psychic development circles, taught mediumship classes, given many readings, practiced reiki, grown my own herbs, and sold my own handmade lavender smoke cleanse bundles, all while continuing to write. Recently, I completed a scifi novel that takes new age themes into a possible human future. I am working on a witch related script. I give phone readings and help clients with one-on-one training.

I am most proud of the community that has gathered around AmericanWitch13. I guess my specialty is my ability to connect with people and mentor them on the path that’s right for them, as well as connecting people with others so they can help each other learn and grow. We’re all one big Instagram coven!

What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I think luck plays a role in everything we do. What causes someone to travel somewhere they’ve never been before only to meet the love of their life? What if they’d never gone? Would they still meet? But luck isn’t everything. In business, as in relationships, you still need to work to maintain momentum. I’m lucky that Instagram exists as a platform I intuitively connect with and feel totally comfortable authentically expressing myself on, and that witchy stuff is trendy right now, but it’s hard work, too. I answer every DM I get (eventually, I get a lot!) to the best of my ability, be it a question about spellcrafting, or communicating with spirits, or book recommendations for a beginner witch. That all takes a lot of time and energy on top of writing, researching, teaching, giving readings, doing interviews and guest spots, not to mention running a household and maintaining friendships all during a global pandemic. But I can’t stop myself! I love helping people. I wish I’d had someone like me when I was younger and struggling with blossoming extrasensory gifts and rediscovering my inner witch. So, maybe, I can be that person for someone else and save them from some of the darkness I endured, or, at least, hold space for them as they journey through it.

However, to get back to luck… I do have a knack for finding four leaf clovers. But is that luck? Is it some supernatural force or excellent eyesight paired with instant pattern recognition? Or, perhaps, it’s a bit of both. After all, I did do a spell for success back in the early days of AmericanWitch13. So, yes, a little bit of luck and a pinch of magic played a role in both my life and business, but mostly hard work and passion.
