Life & Work with Wakeemup Nish

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wakeemup Nish.

Hi Wakeemup Nish, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Los Angeles on the “Eastside” to be exact. I was raised and carried by a Queen named Alyce Bell; my mom passed when I was in my late teens the most traumatizing situation I ever been put in. I grew up shy and to myself, I was the youngest of four kids.

I started writing poetry when I was fourteen and then shortly at sixteen started to fall in love with music!!! I was taking inside the booth when I was seventeen. I had so much to talk about. Music has always been my mouth.

Things I’ve always been afraid to say always seem so easy saying in a song. When my early 20’s came about and I then stopped writing and focused more on my career, I worked at small restaurants, even for Lausd in their corporate office.

The fun didn’t began till I started challenging myself at work. I became a vehicle service attendant at hertz and soon became the first African American plus-size tire and lube technician.

Big fears and challenges came with this position, while people on the outside was proud and excited to see a women in this field, I was just trynna make sure I lock the lifts right lol I mean one wrong mistake can cost you your life! I then soon started back writing. I dropped my first single “my life” where I talked about my mother “dying in my arms”, depression, and how I used my anger to overcome the obstacles.

Followed by “don’t trust em”, “waroutside” “Fatgirls” songs based on a reply to life stereotypes to BBWS. Very popular on “TikTok”, I was actually honored to see so many women making videos to my song. It’s the powerful word for me!!!

At 29, I started my first online hair extension business (@nishtreasureboxxhairextensions) this business journey has been something else. I remember when I first started, everybody doubted me because I was the girl to start something and never finish it but here I am a year later business stronger than ever!!

I am blessed I did this with little to no support from family, I’m just grateful I never gave up, even at my darkest times that just encouraged me to pray harder.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Hell naw nothing in life is easy! Especially when you are dream-chasing, staying focused and learning what’s for you was one of my biggest challenges. And learning how to make myself happy! I think even at 30, I’m still learning what makes “NISH HAPPY”. So many things make me happy (seeing people smile, good vibes, music, etc.). My major struggles come from accepting fake support sometimes in life, you really can’t tell who intentions are good and bad.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was shy a real loaner lol best quality I could ever have. A lot of people can’t even sit at a table by there self (thats when I’m at peace) to me, I was too nice growing up but I blame that on being a cancer (July 12th), our hearts are too good.
