Exploring Life & Business with Kyra Quinones of Sound It Out Speech Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyra Quinones.

Hi Kyra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My company started with just me providing in-home speech therapy and quickly grew to a team of speech therapists serving multiple locations. I realized early on in my career that, just like everything else in our lives, there was a demand for convenient, personalized therapy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think running your own business is ever just a smooth road. Of course, there have been bumps in the road, just like with most things in life. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is that no one teaches you how to run a business. In many ways, you have to teach yourself. I was a psychology major at Loyola Marymount University and wasn’t required to take one class about accounting, business management, or finance. One of the hardest things I’ve had to learn is how to manage the day to day operation of running the company! In my experience, being hyper-organized, quick to respond, and staying on top of that ever-growing “to-do” list is key to a successful practice.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Sound It Out Speech Therapy is a Speech Therapy practice providing in-home speech therapy and teletherapy services by licensed speech-language pathologists throughout Los Angeles and Orange County. Besides the fact that we conveniently come directly to our patients, what sets us apart is that our therapy process is streamlined to help you achieve your goals! We get many clients coming to us whose children have been receiving speech therapy for years with little to no progress. All of our therapy plans are personalized and geared towards helping you or your loved one achieve your goals so that ultimately you don’t need a specialist’s help anymore! There is not a one size fits all equation when it comes to speech therapy. Whomever you work with must understand that developmental, medical, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds need to be considered and taken into account when providing therapy. I’ve been doing this for a long time and can assure you that you won’t always get this type of comprehensive care with just any SLP.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t be afraid to take risks. I remember the first time I started working with private clients. I almost did not take the opportunity because I was still very early on in my career and was afraid I wasn’t “good enough” yet. I had an amazing supervisor who told me to do it! It was the best decision I ever made! I not only was able to help someone with their speech, but it opened up a whole new door to my career and that’s how Sound It Out Speech Therapy started. Within time, word spread about the work I was doing and I was able to establish my company and team to begin helping clients with their speech all around Los Angeles and Orange County.
