Conversations with Jessica Franz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Franz.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started with my parent’s camera and nothing was safe from me at the time. I photographed everything. And the pictures were usually semi-awful to boring. But I got better eventually – partially because I suddenly felt this big responsibility to capture those special moments to look back on one day.

Photography was the perfect tool to quench my thirst for life, expressing myself creatively and having fun doing it. Being sentimental and big on art in general helped of course.

Storytelling has been how I express myself since I can remember, so photography gives me an opportunity to do that visually. It has always been a big part of life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing looked easy about getting into this! And I mean nothing. The sheer investment it took to own the right equipment was a huge stumbling block. But I started small and grew my kit with the business. I want to say it is hard to find clients and beat out the competition as well, but I never really found photography – it found me.

It was a challenge to find my style in the beginning. And don’t ask me how I found it. Guess my vibrant and colorful personality eventually seeped into it naturally. And the goofball I can be at times. Do not threaten me with a good time! No idea is too crazy for me. Like that nude maternity shoot last week… which was one of the funniest times I ever had.

As soon as I had decided to invest in a digital camera, photography kind of took on a life of its own. The more opportunities came up, the more invested I became.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a professional people pleaser with a camera. The client is king. But I’m here to bring ideas if he is open to it. And I’m usually trying hard to keep those within the realm of “realistic.” Although some of the more outlandish ones usually made for the most iconic photos I took. Like the time when I asked my bride and groom to pose on train tracks for me. Dangerous – and one thousand percent worth it. I regret nothing.

Most of my jobs are events or weddings, which I absolutely love! It’s always a blast meeting new people and celebrating with them. I do make an attempt not to steal the show on the dance floor, but I don’t always succeed. Since the pandemic, I had to expand… but I like to keep things versatile anyhow. So now I also do a ton of corporate, proposal, family, maternity, and kids sessions – as well as product photography.

If you dare to book me, you get a reliable German filmmaker/photographer with decent communication skills, a bottomless arsenal of creativity and a sassy-sarcastic humor.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
That’s a good question. As you can imagine, events took a drastic hit during the Pandemic. No one saw that coming, obviously. So, you just never know. I assumed my clients might cut the overall photography budgets in the current climate, but it hasn’t been the case – interestingly enough. We are making tons of lemonade.

It is hard to predict what will happen, but my feeling is that photography will always be around… If the last years have shown anything, it is that loyalty and appreciation have only grown. I get emotional when my clients book me repeatedly because it is like becoming a part of that family, company, or group of people. It goes beyond taking pictures at that point. It is about being the person they trust the most.

What I really love about this job is the relationships. It is being invited to that dinner after a shoot or getting that ridiculously high tip that the young me could’ve never imagined. I’m grateful every day.
