Community Highlights: Meet Skylar Sorkin, Podcast Host of Regardless: You’ve Got This and Sales Leader at The Social Standard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Sorkin.

Hi Skylar, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

I’m a 24-year-old innovator, artist, entrepreneur, and human connector. I’ve had about 19 years of experience in performing arts, dance, theater, hosting, and speaking at large events. For my full-time job, I’m a Senior Sales Manager for an influencer marketing agency in Los Angeles called The Social Standard, we connect brands with creators to create executional influencer marketing campaigns on all social platforms as well as experiential activations.

I’ve experienced a lot growing up, whether that’s navigating through difficult friendships, romantic relationships, eating disorders, trauma, family illnesses, how to ask for a raise, and plenty more! I’m beyond grateful for each of these experiences because I’ve earned an abundance of lessons, stories, support systems, people, and tools to share with my peers and following. Through my work, and deep organic network, I find myself having these empowering and helpful conversations with superhumans that have inspired and helped me navigate and make important decisions as a twenty-something-year-old.

I think we can all agree that college didn’t provide us with a syllabus on “how to do life” or “how to adult.” Our twenties may be the most confusing, scary, and emotional part of growing up. I believe it’s time for twenty-somethings to rid of this narrative, and instead, we should feel empowered, certain, supported, and in control of our dreams and future. Regardless of what comes our way, if we have the proper tools and support all in one platform, just imagine how kick-ass our generation would be and what types of individuals we could be even before our 30s. So, welcome to Regardless, You’ve Got This, The Syllabus for Your Twenty-Something Soul. This is a platform that is home to powerful stories, conversations, and unique syllabuses that belong to my special network of superhumans. These superhumans have truly enriched my life by sharing specific resources & tools that have helped them succeed REGARDLESS of the limitations they may have faced.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

Life is anything but a smooth road, but I believe the bumps are what make life so dang precious. Growing up, I’ve experienced adversity in several areas, which has been

difficult, to say the least. But without these adversities, I wouldn’t be Skylar and there wouldn’t have been any existing fuel to create Regardless. I think sometimes we get so caught up in the idea of just plateauing through life, or believing “I’ll be happy once I lose the 20 pounds, start the new job, or move to a new city,” but the true bliss is in the LIFE, the ZEST, the GROWTH, and the BEAUTY. The ups and downs of the journey are what shape our own regardless story.

One story that showcases my resilience was during my time throughout college and a little bit after post-graduation when I had an eating disorder. This disorder was fueled by other people’s comments, judgments, my own judgments, the need to feel “enough”, and overall “worthy”. My self-worth was defined by the way I looked and felt. I lost my zest for life, connection, and relationships. Food controlled me. Through immense self-work, tears, therapy, journaling, reading, two romantic relationships, and the end of several friendships, I discovered my inner light again. The one phrase that woke me up (my mom told me), I’ll never forget was, “get better for your future self, fuel your body for your future self.” Don’t get me wrong, getting out of denial, taking responsibility and action took grit, it took everything. But I wouldn’t take it back for the world.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

For my full-time gig, I’m a Senior Sales Manager for a full-service influencer marketing agency in LA called The Social Standard. I specialize in connecting with others, establishing strong relationships, understanding a brand’s marketing vision, and communicating that to my team in order to create a scalable influencer strategy that is unique to a brand. My work including my podcast, all starts with the relationship. I’m a human connecter by nature, a leader, speaker, and creator.

As one of the leading sales reps for The Social Standard, I get the opportunity to represent the agency at some of the top global marketing and entertainment conferences. One of my favorite memories includes speaking on The Wellness Panel at SXSW alongside other honorable brand leaders, influencers, and content creators. It’s so crazy to think at 24 years old, and a year and a half out of college, I was a panelist at SXSW and showcased how CPG brands can work with influencers to create successful and ROI-driven campaigns. Hard work, courage, and drive pay off. I’m forever proud of myself and my growth this past year.

I’m most proud of my consistent discipline, bravery, and grit to walk up to anyone and start a conversation regardless of title or status. I’m the proudest of always speaking my truth, showing up as the authentic me, regardless of whether or not someone agrees or likes me. Regardless of my age, regardless of failing, I just go for it, and that’s what sets me apart.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory has to be my family’s annual Summer trips to Costa Rica. The amount of joy and bliss these trips would bring to my mind, body, and soul is indescribable. When someone asks “if you could be anywhere right now where would it be? My answer will always be “Costa Rica in the middle of the ocean surrounded by a jungle and looking back at my mother, father, and brother on the sand.” I can’t think of anything more energizing. These trips were the catalysts to hope, inspiration, connection, and my version of spirituality. I feel so lucky that I was able to create such deep and special memories with my family every summer, as I know how rare that is. No matter what happened throughout the year, whether it was middle school or high school drama, I always had our Costa Rica fam excursions to count on.
