Will Rich shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Will , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
There is nothing more satisfying and wholesome than witnessing my daughter learn and grow. Her ability to adapt and find her path has been utterly amazing and I live for witnessing her become more and more wise and loving each and every day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Joy Scout was conceived from a place of love; to exalt and uplift women by providing them high quality, one of a kind pieces that dignify them.
We thrive on opening people’s hearts by uplifting them with beauty in design.
We use upcycled silk and cotton as a way to make beauty from repurposed materials.
Bringing joy to people through this ethos motivates us in all ways.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
When people lose respect for one another, when they close off the idea that we are human and are flawed, we dehumanize and cause pain to one another.
We are only as good as our word, and by doing what we say we will do, we are all able to gain trust of one another and develop strong bonds.
When respect is lost and trust is diminished, we all suffer.
Stay true to your word and respect all who come across your path.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
We learn through contrast: we know what we want from what we don’t want.
When challenges arise, it’s easy to judge it and become a victim to the circumstance.
I have learned that by not resisting what is occurring and embracing the moment, there is always revelation on the other side of the challenge.
There is grace in struggle, but you have to view the moment as a passing stage. If you don’t, it’s very easy to derail.
Struggle builds strength. Strength yields conviction. Conviction practiced daily produces wisdom.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
The truth is, we have all been traumatized in a realm that is confusing and adversarial.
When someone’s trauma is exposed, they often become very fearful which leads to anger or destruction.
Admitting that we all have healing to do is not a popular conviction in a world that wants to prove its rightness.
Staying humble, while “sounding” good, is something that most people resist or dismiss. But, it is how grace blossoms.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What will you regret not doing?
Telling the truth and living righteously. This way of being has caused great loss in my life because many don’t want to hear the truth. But we only have our convictions and the divine always knows if we have lived a life that serves that eternal energy.
