We’re looking forward to introducing you to Paul Kim. Check out our conversation below.
Paul, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
A normal day for me is waking up and doing my best not to check my phone. I’m sure a lot of people go through the same struggle as I do. After that battle I like to get up and the first thing I do is go for my morning coffee. After I have my morning coffee I go straight to work by replying to messages and emails and get caught up with anything I need to. Then I go listen to some new music either sent to me or any new artist that has caught my attention. By the time I am done with my coffee and finished listening to new music, 90 minutes are up.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Paulie, but I go by Paulie Beats, I’m a music producer and DJ from Los Angeles, CA. My story is very similar to a lot of artist who have dreams of playing shows for a large audience. It all started in the bedroom with an idea and a dream to make music for everyone to enjoy. What makes my journey unique is that its my own journey as there is no one direction to make it in the music industry. Everyone has their own path they have to take to get there. For me it all started during Covid 2021 when I purchased an acoustic guitar just to get back into playing music. I’ve always played the guitar since Jr high and loved music since I can remember purchasing CDs and it was only when I began recording music and exploring music production and engineering that I knew this was what I wanted to pursue. There are many countless days and nights of learning and trying to improve on theses skills. You have to really love what you do in order to achieve greatness. But once I fell into this rabbit hole of music production I knew that this is what I wanted to do and found the passion that lot of people search for their whole lives.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who taught you the most about work?
Coming from parents who emigrated here from South Korea, working hard is all that they knew to provide for the family. I see how hard they work and it showed me that nothing ever comes easy and that you have to work hard for everything you want. They showed me that success doesn’t come overnight but It requires dedication, consistency, and discipline. That mindset will stick with me forever and became the foundation for how I approach my music career.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
It’s funny this question comes up because I know many people in music give up because it’s a difficult and long journey. But for me I have no intention of giving up as I am in it for the long run. I know that the hard work, long hours, and sleepless night will be worth it in the end. I have never worked harder for something than my music journey. It reminds of a quote by mac miller, “The number one reason why people give up so fast is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they’ve gotten.” I am enjoying the journey and everything that comes along the way.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
I feel being your authentic self no matter where you are is the best choice. Life is too hard to be wearing a mask everywhere you go. So to answer this question, yes, the public version of me will be the realest version of me you’ll get. Whether you see me on social media or in the street in person, I am always my true authentic self.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel the most at peace when I am alone and able to create music. Starting from a blank project and turning nothing into something is such a great feeling even though there are those tough days when being creative doesn’t work out. When the music does click though, everything else doesn’t matter, you are on your creative flow, and it brings peace as you are creating something that you love, music.
