Story & Lesson Highlights with Kathryn Di Gioia of Torrance

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kathryn Di Gioia. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Kathryn, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I’m walking a path.. my path. It’s shaped by the choices I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned, and the vision I have for where I’m going. I may not know every turn ahead, but I know exactly why I’m on it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Kathryn Di Gioia, owner of Studio Di Gioia, a one woman salon specializing in lived-in color, balayage, and extensions. After more than a decade behind the chair, I’ve learned that great hair is about confidence and connection. My journey began as a receptionist at a franchise salon; within a year of getting licensed, I took the leap to open my own studio. Now, I’m dedicated to helping women feel unstoppable while inspiring stylists to thrive without burning out.”

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My parents. My dad is truly one of the hardest workers I know. He worked hard my entire life.. more than anyone I know. I feel watching his work ethic really molded me into the worker I am today and I’m grateful for all the hard work he did. I hope he realizes that doesn’t go unnoticed. My mom was also a very hard worker. She raised my sisters and I all while running and maintaining the household while my dad was at work. Now that I’m older, I literally have no idea how she was able to accomplish all of that, raise three kids, do laundry and still manage to cook a fresh hot meal every night. I’m barely hanging on!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. After opening my studio, I had only a handful of clients and no idea where my next dollar would come from or if I could even pay rent. I remember sitting in my studio, praying every day, tears in my eyes as I looked at my empty books. Having one client a day (sometimes in whole week) But I kept going. I kept showing up, pushing forward, and trusting the process. One day, it all paid off and it’s what’s brought me to where I am today. I’m forever grateful I didn’t give up.”

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
Treat the janitor with the same respect you’d treat a CEO. 100% agree with that.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Absolutely. I never look for validation from others to keep moving forward. I believe everyone should be their own cheerleader and believe in themselves enough to keep moving forward. Getting praise is great and sure everyone loves it. But believing in yourself and proving to yourself that you can do it is more beautiful in the long run.
