We’re looking forward to introducing you to Kala Carela. Check out our conversation below.
Kala, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
I found myself losing track of time when i am singing, writing or when i am following a song with my bass.
When i feel more myself afterwards is when music is in my life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As a multifaceted artist originally from Madrid, Spain, I’ve called Los Angeles home for the past eight years. My artistic journey began with expressionist portraits, transitioning through abstract landscapes and a period of experimentation with materials like dried roses and resin. Mixed media has become my creative sanctuary, providing limitless expression. Currently, I’m returning to portraiture, but with the incorporation of vibrant, dynamic elements from my abstract explorations.
My innate connection to music, my first passion, infuses my paintings with movement and rhythm. My art is a fusion of music, photography, and writing, serving as a raw, authentic reflection of myself. While not perfect, my work showcases a unique and special perspective. The recurring motif of eyes, often depicted with “tears of blood,” symbolizes the inevitable presence and necessity of suffering in life.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
I am ready to release the persistent patterns of self-doubt that have often held me back, along with the ingrained feelings of low self-esteem that have caused me to question my abilities and worth, and finally, the relentless pursuit of perfectionism that has prevented me from embracing my journey and enjoying the process of growth and learning.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Every day, I almost gave up. I was about to leave this city for good, but I couldn’t. I was about to drop the brushes, but then I smelled the paint, and I couldn’t. I woke up tired of trying, ready to find a different kind of job, but then I put on my headphones, grabbed my bass, and played. I couldn’t give up. Then, I’d spend a night writing, and I’d decide I didn’t want to give up. These moments, these creative urges, are what keep me going, reminding me of the passion that fuels my soul.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My deepest values revolve around experiencing the fullness of love and romantic connection. I crave passionate relationships that ignite my soul, even if they bring emotional challenges. I believe in the power of romance and am drawn to experiences that evoke strong feelings and create lasting memories.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What light inside you have you been dimming?
I have been suppressing my innate connection to spirituality, including practices like astrology, tarot card readings, and Human Design. I’ve also been avoiding my natural inclination to help and guide others, particularly through coaching and mentorship.
