Jorge V. Gonzalez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Jorge V., a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
As I look back on my journey, I see more than events and experiences—I see the God leading me into the life I was created to live.”
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
How do you pick yourself up when life knocks you down in a way you never saw coming? How do you start over when everything you thought you were building suddenly feels out of reach?
I never thought I’d have to ask myself those questions. For more than twenty years, I poured myself into a career I loved. Then, in what felt like an instant, it was gone. A disability left me unable to keep doing the work I had spent decades perfecting. I felt lost. Angry. Broken. I had no idea who I was without that part of my life.
But in the middle of that pain, I remembered where I came from. My parents and grandparents were people who carried heavy burdens, who worked with their hands and risked everything for the chance at a better life. They didn’t complain. They didn’t quit. They believed that even in struggle, there was hope for tomorrow.
That memory pushed me to keep going. It reminded me that setbacks don’t have to be the end of the story—they can be the beginning of a new one. In writing Answer The Call: Life Lessons From Family Origins Through Invention and Struggle is my attempt to share how I found my way forward. It’s not a perfect roadmap. It’s messy, it’s real, and it’s full of both failure and faith.
My hope is that as you turn these pages, you’ll see yourself in my story—and that you’ll find the courage to answer your own call, even when life doesn’t go the way you planned.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Ever since I was very young, I had a deep sense that God had a greater purpose for my life. At the time, I didn’t know what that purpose was—I hadn’t truly lived or experienced life yet.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
When I first became disabled, I truly thought my life was over. I felt hopeless, depressed, and confused, and there were moments when I just wanted it all to end. But in the middle of that darkness, God showed me something I didn’t know about myself — how strong I really was. He reminded me that nothing can stop His will for my life and His plan for me to succeed. Out of that pain came a calling: to share His message and encourage others to ‘Answer the Call.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
It is my mission and my commitment to be obedient to God’s calling on my life. I will share the message of Answer The Call for as long as I live, because I truly believe this is what God created me to do until my very last day.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I want people to know and remember that I was committed to God’s plan for my life. I believed in His purpose for me, and I walked in faith no matter the struggle. The journey I went through wasn’t just for me—it was meant to inspire others, to show what we are capable of creating and conquering when we choose to believe and trust that God is on our side.
