Story & Lesson Highlights with Dana Rubin of Malibu

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dana Rubin. Check out our conversation below.

Dana, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
When I have a session on the beaches of Malibu and we are blessed with a beautiful sunset I completely lose track of time.
This past week, I had the opportunity to capture memories for a couple who was here from Fort Worth, Texas. It was windy when we first arrive and the sky was looking pretty grey. Then the slightest bit of pink turned in to an entire sky filed with pinks and purples as the clouds parted ways for our last few minutes of the session. Pelicans flew over their head and I was able to capture the most wonderful images of the moment. I truly felt like I wanted to bottle up the sky and keep it forever.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a boutique portrait and family photographer. I specialize in connecting and creating moments with my clients so that they may celebrate those closest to them on a daily basis as they see the images in their home.

I love meeting new families and also seeing families year over year as their kids grow up. There are a few families that I took their children’s baby photos and also took their graduation photos.

I capture Cap and Gown photos, headshots and do personal branding sessions. Nature is my canvas and the outdoors is my studio.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
From the time I was a child my best friend’s mom believed in me. I always had a passion for photography and she was my biggest encourager to share my passion with others. Oftentimes she would ask me why I wasn’t doing more to share my talents with others and to create memories for more families. She would be so proud of me if she could see what I am doing today and how I help people by making a difference in their lives.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
I believe that suffering teaches you to think and reevaluate your life. How did I get here and how can I move forward? Then making decisions to take you down paths that will continue to create you as your best self.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What truths are so foundational in your life that you rarely articulate them?
Honesty and Integrity are foundational truths in my life. I was taught from a very young age if you tell the truth you only have one story to remember and it will always remain the same. If you stay honest and live a life of integrity you will maintain living on the high road. Your decisions will be for your best self and those that you care for around you. It is frustrating when someone challenges my integrity because I know I am always 100% honest in everything that I do.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not traveling more. I’d like to travel to many places here in the states and around the world. I love to learn about different cultures and see how other people live in their daily life. When I travel, it feels like I have opened up a book and I am inside a story at another place and time. The scenery, food, architecture and sights are often so different from here at home.
