Today we’d like to introduce you to Xiaodie Huang.
Hi Xiaodie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Having lived both in China and the United States, I have gained diverse experiences that have brought me to Los Angeles, where I currently reside and cherish. In high school, I pursued music, unsure of which area to focus on. However, my time studying communication studies in the U.S. and taking art classes on the side sparked my passion for creating art and design. Drawing inspiration from the people and cities I have loved and lived in, I started exploring different mediums and techniques, finding solace and eagerness in the creative process.
As my college friends began applying to universities, I found myself lost and unsure of my path. Despite feeling a deep interest in design, I struggled to identify it as my passion. It was during a conversation with my sculptor professor that I was introduced to the concept of graphic design. She encouraged me to follow my heart and not let others dictate my path. This conversation was both inspiring and eye-opening, leading me to research design schools and extend my college education to prepare my portfolio and applications.
My efforts paid off, and I was accepted into ArtCenter College of Design, my first choice. Today, as a member of the professional design world, I am proud of the journey that led me here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path of a designer is filled with challenges, and creative roadblocks can often cause setbacks. Initially, I struggled to navigate these obstacles and found that simply staring at the design was not enough to overcome them. However, as I learned from experienced designers and professors and experimented with different design techniques, my approach to problem-solving evolved.
Now, when faced with a creative roadblock, I rely on a rigorous and effective design process to guide me through it. This includes reviewing notes, references, and multiple design iterations, allowing me to explore various options and possibilities. It is often surprising how a solution emerges, seemingly out of nowhere, and turns out to be the most viable option.
Through this journey, I have learned that overcoming creative challenges is not always about finding the perfect solution but rather the process of exploring and experimenting until the best solution emerges. This mindset has allowed me to approach creative roadblocks with confidence and find innovative solutions that push my design skills to the next level.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Los Angeles-based graphic designer specializing in identity systems, spatial experiences, and editorial design. Design is my ultimate means of self-expression, and it allows me to forge connections with others. As a concept-driven designer, I firmly believe that beauty lies in the expression of underlying meaning. Each design decision I make carries a profound significance and is backed by relatable stories.
My work extends beyond my personal experiences and encompasses a universal language that resonates with people from different walks of life. I am acutely aware of my surroundings, and my design inspirations are drawn from my daily life. Whether it’s designing books or posters, my aim is to shed light on the hidden emotions and stories of the people.
Furthermore, I have expanded my visual abilities beyond the screen to evoke emotional responses in space. I believe in approaching design challenges from multiple perspectives without being fixated on a particular style. This process allows me to unravel complexity and create designs that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally effective.
In summary, as a graphic designer, I strive to create designs that are conceptually driven, emotionally impactful, and visually appealing. My design process involves a deep understanding of the underlying meaning, relatable stories, and a multi-perspective approach to unraveling complexity.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The key to maintaining patience in your design journey is to avoid being too hard on yourself. Design is a constant journey of accepting challenges and unlocking unexpected potential. It’s natural to want to find your passion and achieve your goals as quickly as possible, but it’s important to remember that the journey is just as important as the destination.
It’s okay if things don’t go according to plan in the beginning. What’s essential is how you choose to proceed. Every experience, whether successful or not, teaches us valuable lessons that can help us grow and evolve as designers. So, if things aren’t working out just yet, try to look at it from a positive perspective. Believe that good things will come your way as you continue working towards your goals.
In summary, practicing self-compassion and embracing the challenges that come with the design journey is the key to being patient with yourself. Every experience teaches us something valuable, and it’s essential to focus on the lessons learned, even if things don’t go according to plan. Trust that good things will come your way as you work towards your goals.
