Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophie Forcioli.
Hi Sophie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started off in comedy by doing some jokes for a group of healthcare workers in India when I was on a medical surgical mission trip. I was just messing around at first, then someone on the bus suggested I give stand-up comedy a go when I got back to LA. I got back to LA and did an open mic and bombed, hard. After that, it pissed me off how much harder it was than I imagined. Then I got addicted and have been doing it ever since!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not smooth at all! I think one of the hardest and best things about stand-up comedy today is social media. It is a great way to connect with people but it also makes you feel like you are never doing enough.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
This past year I have been traveling a lot for comedy. I think it is super valuable to see your work in different parts of the country. Everywhere you go can have a different energy. I’ve done shows all over the country in the past year. East Coast, Midwest, down south, and back on the west coast and it always keeps me on my toes. I do not expect everyone to like my jokes, but it’s so interesting to see how your jokes can generate such different reactions based on where you are and the environment. I did two shows on a Saturday night down south and the 7:30pm show was really tense and reserved. The 9:30 show was absolutely wild. The drunkest crowd I have ever performed in front of. People shouting out things in the middle of a joke, talking loud, and just overall wild behavior. It is crazy to put yourself in those situations on stage and just roll with it and see how your comedy adapts to the environment.
What’s next?
I just want to keep growing and developing in comedy. I have fun merch for sale now too, some cool cartoon versions of myself on bucket hats cause I hear that’s what the kids are into these days. But in all realness, I just want to keep doing my thing and writing jokes. I love when I’m just driving and all of a sudden I can’t wait until I’m done driving because I thought of something I want to write down for a joke.
