Today we’d like to introduce you to Slim Fearing.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story here started a decade ago when I bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles right after high school to pursue my dreams as an actress. I was a wide-eyed, hungry, and determined student at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts. An experience I will never forget.
I studied there and graduated after two years. As incredible as it was, reality hit once I realized I actually had to put in hard work to survive the LA chaos. I’m forever grateful for my college sisters/roomies, who I ventured off with for the next several years.
It became survival mode to afford rent, try and network, and put out creative projects all at once. We watched old classmates move back home while facing our own hardships and doubts, but we always made it work. I couldn’t have done it without them, my family, and God, whom kept me grounded.
Endless nights in the hospitality and nightlife industries, tons of creative projects, and a near-fatal accident later, I’m still here. I’ve been a part of music videos, short films, commercials, mixed media, featured spots, and directing. Also, I had a baby with my long-time partner and we recently married.
The past ten years have been a whirlwind, but no matter what life has in store for me, I get through it. I’m nowhere near done.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a pretty smooth road for the most part. I think it’s safe to say that life is chaotic for everyone in its own way. I faced some insecurities and many “no’s.” I’ve felt down and not always the most confident… those types of seasonal negativities.
However, I’ve also faced dark times. A few years ago, I got hit by a car while crossing a crosswalk. I thank God it wasn’t worse than it was, but it set me back a couple of years. The physical and mental toll it took on not only me but my partner, too, was demoralizing. I never sulked in it for too long for my dignity. The pandemic came soon after and we all know how that went.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actress and director. One day, I’d love to be known for that by more than my close community. I’m proud of my commercial work because I used to think that they wouldn’t normally cast an Afro-Latina woman like me, but I’ve seen the industry change finally over the years.
I’m proud of the “Señorita” music video by Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes that I’m in. I play Camila’s co-worker and I give her a lil pep talk about Shawn towards the end of the video on the bench. It’s not the biggest role, but it was fun and exciting to work with a fellow Latina and represent in that way.
I’m also proud that when I was pregnant, I directed my friends’ music videos and was the assistant director of another project. I thought that was pretty badass.
Honestly, my charisma, my talent, my energy, and my dedication are what sets me apart from others. I can’t be anyone else, and no one else can be me.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
Absolutely. I might miss a few, but at the forefront of my mind starting back in high school, my theatre teacher, Mr. Utterback, played a huge role in fueling my passion for the arts. He enabled me to be fun, creative, and theatre weird. I always had a blast doing our plays and learning from his eccentric styles.
In college, Mrs. Gossett was a huge motivator for me. She is blunt, honest, and uplifting- all at once. I am forever in awe of her and what she brings to the table.
My super talented former classmates and close creative friends. I have learned a bit from everyone and have much respect for so many of them.
My husband and family. They are my biggest cheerleaders and keep my head level.
