Today we’d like to introduce you to Skyy Mitchell
Hi Skyy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in love with electronic music, from as early of an age as I can remember, I was listening to music for hours everyday. I first got interested in DJing when I was a freshman in highschool, I played my first gig at a school dance when I was 14, and I even got to DJ my best friend’s wedding when I was 18.
After I graduated highschool I fell out of DJing and spent years doing other things with my time, mostly wasting it gaming.
It wasn’t until the Spring of 2024 that I even touched DJing again, I was going through a lot of changes in my life and trying to find myself… And I just woke up one day and decided to DJ again.
One of my best friends is also a DJ / Musician and he taught me how to mix for a few hours and got me back into it. He ended up inviting me to downtown Redlands at this Edm / Open Format nightclub called, “ProjektRedlands.” By my third or fourth time attending Projekt, I opened for Projektraves which is one of the resident collectives.
I got hooked, throwing everything I had into DJing and growing my media and industry presence. I really just wanted to be up there mixing music in front of a crowd more than anything. For any of the DJs and musicians out there, heck even just the performers and entertainers… you know what I mean. It’s addictive.
In less than one year I performed for 100 different Edm events across all of Southern California. From beach parties, to desert camping raves… Or popular nightclubs like Catchone. I’ve broken into a very exclusive scene rather quickly.
People who have gotten to know me and see me grow as a DJ and artist know how far I’ve come and how hard I’ve fought. In such a short time, I’ve gotten a residency as a DJ with several groups, I founded my own DJ Collective and we have a residency at a club, I’ve performed at events I used to only dream of just attending!
It’s been an incredible journey so far and I’m excited to announce I’ll be producing music in the near future. My dream is to go beyond DJing clubs and the underground, and make my own music and perform at shows across the world. I have a long road ahead of me and I’m very excited for each chapter along the way.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, I mean anyone in the music industry can tell you… Whether currently or formerly pursuing a career in music, it’s a lot of grueling work. Non-stop, everyday.
Adding to that, you have to grow social media presence to be seen as relevant within most circles as a DJ, you have to earn respect and trust before people will work with you.
I’ve invested thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into just being able to DJ, whether that’s practicing or buying gear. Or even just the gas to get to and from events. It’s very expensive.
I’d also say standing out isn’t easy, you need to treat DJing like a serious form of art or you won’t succeed with it.
Honor yourself and express yourself but make sure to stand out somehow, usually by being dedicated and intensely passionate.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m most known for my work as a DJ, Event Organizer, Artist and Dancer.
I’ve worked under several aliases but my most well-known is “99skyyy”
As for what sets me apart? Most definitely my ambition and natural talent. I’ve built a DJ persona from the ground up in less than a year playing world famous venues and working with legit artists known around the world.
As a trans woman, there are many obstacles to success in the DJ bubbles and broader music industries. I’ve faced them and overcome them time and time again.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I spent most of my freetime gaming, listening to music, and watching TV. I loved being outdoors too don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice being at home and escaping into a good story, whether that’s an album, movie or videogame.
Some of the best days were waking up on a Sunday and fighting with my siblings all day over whose turn it was next to play Tony Hawk’s Underground or Star Wars Battlefront 2. My siblings and I spent a lot of time playing outside together and going to sports games and practices. I was the happiest when I was around them.
I picked up several hobbies when I was younger; Snowboarding, Skateboarding, Baseball, Tennis, DJing, Guitar, Drawing, Writing. I guess I have to always be doing something, keep busy. Even if to someone else it seems like a waste of time, I love to be stimulated and engaged throughout my days.
