Today we’d like to introduce you to Siyu Li.
Hi Siyu, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I embarked on my musical journey from China, venturing to the US at 17 to attend high school near Seattle, Washington. My passion for music led me to pursue a major in music at the University of California, San Diego. Along my path, I explored various facets of the music industry, from performing as a singer to producing albums for leading Chinese artists. Beyond music, I nurtured a love for ballet and jewelry design, even launching my own jewelry design brand. This diverse blend of interests and experiences has shaped my unique perspective in music production and artistic expression.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey through the music and arts industry has indeed been challenging, more so than many other fields. In the early years of university, to afford musical instruments and production software, I took on over 13 different jobs. I even earned a minor in business to better navigate the commercial aspects of my career. However, I’ve often found myself losing direction and forgetting my original intent, only to return to music creation. The path was not always clearly difficult; more often, I found myself lost in chaos or had my plans disrupted by unforeseen events, making it hard to return to my intended trajectory.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a music producer, my work encompasses songwriting, lyric crafting, and production, embodying the essential skills of an independent creator. I collaborate with artists to bring their ideas to life, whether through composing melodies, writing lyrics, or arranging music. Additionally, I contribute sound design for films and TV shows, enhancing the auditory experience. What sets me apart is my holistic approach to music production and my ability to translate complex emotions into sound. I’m most proud of my ability to work across genres and mediums, offering a unique blend of creativity and technical expertise that enriches each project I undertake.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
Your appreciation for Los Angeles beautifully captures the city’s essence, highlighting the enchanting sunset beaches, iconic palm trees, and the vibrant art scene resulting from global cultural exchanges. This dreamy movie city indeed radiates an energy that is palpable and inspiring. However, your concern about the worsening public safety issue is a sentiment shared by many residents, reflecting a complex challenge that the city faces amidst its many wonders.
