Rising Stars: Meet Raphaela Lacerda

Today we’d like to introduce you to Raphaela Lacerda.

Raphaela Lacerda

Hi Raphaela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey in the world of classical music began in São Paulo, Brazil, where I was born and nurtured in a rich musical environment. This early immersion in music sparked a deep fascination with its ability to evoke emotions and connect people. This passion fueled my pursuit of formal training in conducting, starting with local orchestras in Brazil and progressing to intensive studies and masterclasses with renowned conductors worldwide.

My educational journey includes earning a bachelor’s degree in Conducting from São Paulo State University, where I had the privilege of studying under Dr. Abel Rocha and Dr. Lutero Rodrigues. This foundational education was further enriched by my master’s degree in Instrumental Conducting from Azusa Pacific University, where I studied under Professor Christopher Russell. These mentorships were instrumental in molding my career path and artistic perspective.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the honor of conducting esteemed orchestras in Brazil and the United States, including the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, and San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Receiving the 2023 Emerging Professional Award from the Association of California Symphony Orchestras was a significant milestone, recognizing not only my achievements but also my commitment to musical excellence and mentorship.

Today, as Orchestra Director of the World Music Symphony Orchestra at Azusa Conservatory of Music and Assistant Conductor for the Musicians at Play Foundation and Diamond Youth Symphony Orchestra, I continue to channel my passion for music into inspiring performances and nurturing the next generation of talented musicians. Furthermore, I serve as the Associate Conductor of the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, contributing to its artistic vision and musical excellence.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Navigating the male-dominated field of conducting as a female conductor has its challenges. Overcoming biases and stereotypes requires strong leadership, confidence, and a clear artistic vision. Building a support network of mentors and allies who champion diversity has been crucial. Despite these challenges, being part of a growing group of talented musicians striving for equality in the classical music field is inspiring.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
