Today we’d like to introduce you to Modest Fly Art Team Tsaturyan.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Modest Fly Art began in 2009 as a creative space where children and adults could learn the fundamentals of art. For many years, it served as a place for people to explore their creativity and grow artistically. In 2017, the founder decided to transition Modest Fly Art into a nonprofit organization, marking an important turning point in its mission. From that moment, our passion for the arts evolved into something deeper we began incorporating Art Therapy, Fine Arts, and Enrichment Programs for schools.
As a team, we’ve grown together, bringing on amazing and dedicated teachers who share our commitment to engaging, inspiring, and promoting the arts within our community and beyond. Today, we are proud to partner with several public schools, offering programs that give youth a creative outlet to express themselves and discover the healing and empowering potential of art.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
According to the program coordinator of course not, smooth roads rarely lead to something truly meaningful. As an artist and nonprofit director, the journey has had its share of bumps, pivots, and moments of trial and error, but that’s also where the growth happens. One of our biggest challenges has been getting more schools to implement our programs during school hours. The process involves extensive paperwork, authorizations, and time before schools even have the chance to see the value we bring. Despite these challenges, each step has strengthened our commitment to making art accessible and showing how creativity can positively impact students’ lives. Governments budget/ we have been offering free trial periods with grants funding so we are able to introduce the program.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Modest Fly Art is built on collaboration, heart, and a shared belief in the transformative power of creativity. Our organization has many branches, and each one reflects the dedication and teamwork of the people behind it. At the foundation of this journey is Iren Tsaturyan, our founder, whose vision has inspired everyone who has walked through our doors. Iren studied at Art Center College of Design and later earned her Master’s in Art Education from Boston University. Her passion for the arts and her commitment to nurturing creative expression are what allowed Modest Fly Art to grow into what it is today.
A meaningful part of our story is the growth of those who have been shaped by this space. Sofia Kazorian, who first came to Modest Fly Art as an 11 year old student, is now the Director of the nonprofit. Her focus is on bringing Art Therapy, Fine Arts, and Enrichment Programs to schools and local communities, creating accessible spaces for youth to express themselves and feel supported.
Our team also includes Samantha Matara, our Program Coordinator. Art has always been a vital part of Samantha’s life, influencing the way she connects with others from her early experiences in artistic gymnastics and performing arts to her work today in inspiring students through creative expression.
At Modest Fly Art, we believe that art can heal, inspire, and build confidence especially for young people who may be navigating challenges or searching for their voice. We take pride in the programs we bring to schools and communities, offering children and teens a safe, supportive environment to explore who they are.
What we are most proud of is witnessing the growth of our students. Seeing a child light up when they realize their artwork matters, or watching a teen gain confidence through creativity, is incredibly meaningful. These moments remind us why we do this work.
What truly sets us apart is our personal, heart-centered approach. We’re not just teaching art we’re building community. We’re fostering emotional growth, connection, and confidence. Every program we design comes from a place of care, intention, and the unwavering belief that art truly changes lives.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Sofia Kazorian’s favorite childhood memory comes from her early days at Modest Fly Art. When she first walked through the doors at age 11, the studio became a safe and welcoming space where she could express herself freely and explore her creativity without hesitation. Over time, her connection to the studio deepened not just as a student, but as part of a growing community.
As she grew older, Sofia began teaching the youngest class, guiding children who were just beginning their own creative journeys. This experience shaped her understanding of the importance of encouragement, patience, and providing a nurturing environment for young artists. It was during these early years that Sofia realized how art can support emotional growth and self discovery, planting the seeds for the work she continues today.
These memories remain meaningful to her because they represent the beginning of her relationship with art as a form of expression, connection, and healing values that she now carries forward into her role as Director of Non-profit at Modest Fly Art.
