Rising Stars: Meet Meredith Dubois of Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meredith Dubois

Hi meredith, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Meredith DuBois I’m a LA native Borne and raised in Manhattan Beach CA. Growing up I spent all my time at the Beach. All my favorite memories of playing in the sand and splashing in the ocean have stuck with me into my adult hood. The Ocean has become my primary muse. Im drawn to the natural elements of water and sand and sun mixed with the color of people and umbrellas and beach towels. There’s element in a painting evokes the emotion of warmth, love, memories, inner peace and play.
I am a self taught artist. Art was a way of escaping feeling less then since I struggled in school due to learning disabilities. It was my dream from young age to be an artist. With the sports of my family I am able to achieve my goal of being a full-time artist.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting out I didn’t know much about the art business side of thing, and Im still learning. All I new was I love painting and I wanted this to be my life. I read all the book I could and listen to all the podcast that would help with the business side of thing, This defiantly helped me along the way.

It took a while to find my audience. Once I realized I can’t make a painting that every-single person would love. However if I paint from a place of love and a genuine part of my self, it will speak to the right person at the right time. I used to think something was wrong with my painting if It didn’t sell within a year of making it. Know I understand that its waiting for the perfect moment and person to find eachother.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My medium of choice is oil on canvas or paper. I love to paint sea scape and fun beach days or tall LA palm trees. I’ve always been drawn to impressionistic art work. As well as very thick texture oil paintings. My artistic process: I take my sketch books and sit on the beach for hours. I drawing inspiration from the sounds, smell, colors, lighting. I use my scotch book to create larger oil painting in my home studio. I don’t have one way of starting a paining. For the most part I use a brush for an under paining then I use a pallet knife to add intuitive texture which is my favorite part!

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband Robbie who works his own full time job but finds the time to helps me with all the IT, taxes. Stuff that I have no idea how to do, or want to do. He also help with events, long days of set up and braking down.
One of my favorite pod casters who has help quite a bit is Jodie King and The Honest Art Podcast. She has helped be by giving me hundreds of pro-tips from pricing to connecting with galleries. She is a gem.
