Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Benedek.
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up immersed in the New York City art scene, spending my childhood in my father’s SoHo gallery, surrounded by artists and an incredible range of artwork. Art quickly became my outlet, and at a young age I began studying at the Art Students League, sketching nude models and absolutely loving it.
I eventually built a career as a jewelry designer, but during Covid I found myself ordering art supplies again and returning to painting. One thing led to another: a gallery discovered my work, exhibitions began accepting my submissions, and I found myself painting every day. My days often start at 5:30 AM and stretch into the evenings. It’s my passion and the air that I breathe. Art has always been my language an entirely visual way to express what words never can.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe that when you have a true passion for something and the determination to keep honing your craft you will find your way to success. There were certainly moments when I submitted work to juried shows and wasn’t accepted, but those setbacks only drove me to work harder and refine my art even further.
Being an artist doesn’t come with the security of a steady paycheck; it’s a trade-off in many ways. But the fulfillment of creating every day is incomparable. And when your work resonates with someone enough that they purchase it, not only does it validate the effort, you also earn back the investment. It’s a beautiful, rewarding cycle that makes the journey worthwhile.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an abstract artist led by my intuition. My paintings are driven by instinct, color, movement, and emotion guiding each brushstroke. I’m known for my distinctive color palettes, where hues flow, collide, and react to one another to create a sense of energy and depth.
What I’m most proud of is my dedication to my craft. I show up every day with intention and discipline, continually pushing myself to evolve as an artist. I’m also proud to lead workshops where I can share this creative process with others. Watching people open up, connect with their own inner voices, and experience that spark of self-expression is profoundly rewarding. Being part of those moments feels like an extension of the art itself.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Let’s be honest, choosing to be an artist is a risk in itself. It requires a belief in your own vision and a deep passion for the work you create. For me, the real risk lies in showing up day after day, pushing through uncertainty, and continually putting my work out into the world through exhibitions and juried shows.
Another meaningful risk has been committing to my own artistic voice. Developing a truly personal style means letting go of outside opinions and resisting the temptation to create what you think will appeal to the masses. I’ve learned that the moment I began painting from within, fully aligned with what I love, everything started to click. Authenticity is a risk, but it’s also where the greatest rewards come from.
