Rising Stars: Meet Matteson Gregory of Springfield, MO

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matteson Gregory

Hi Matteson , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been surrounded by music for as long as I can remember. My dad played in various rock bands in Phoenix back in the 90’s and there are home videos of me always going towards the guitars. I was just always drawn to music and I loved singing. Especially at our family karaoke nights. I’d be singing my little heart out to ABBA and I always threw in a costume change. It wasn’t until I was 12 that my dad taught me guitar and that was when I started to write songs. That was where I fell in love with music and knew it was what I wanted to do. Through my teenage years, I was pretty quiet about this dream I had. I think I just didn’t have confidence and was honestly just waiting to get out of high school. However, my mom made me promise her I would perform at one show before I graduated which I couldn’t really say no too. So I performed an original song of mine at my senior high school assembly and it was not what I expected….. everyone loved it! That moment made me regain my confidence and I went head first into becoming an artist. From there I performed where ever they’d let me, attend songwriting conferences, and I also started recording my music. I released my first single in 2019 (Comfortable) and have been since then.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. I think some of the biggest struggles I faced were not just the “no’s” or opinions of other people, but more so the voice inside my head that made me think for the longest time I couldn’t do this. When I was 13, I decided to participate in a local talent show in my hometown. Which I thought would lead to lots of opportunity but I was vey much disappointed when I was booed off stage. It really put a dent in my self esteem and really made me question if I could do this at all. I decided not to dwell too much and just took action. I started taking voice lessons and still continued to write music. Now I feel I have the confidence in not only myself, but I know who I am and what I want to represent as an artist.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an independent pop artist and my goal has been to help people feel less alone. I think just to be a friend to people when they feel like they have no one. Like I want to be the artist there for you when you’re trying to tell your crush how you feel or you’re just trying to get through life. My sound has been described as a mix of Taylor Swift and Alanis Morissette (which was one of the best compliments I’ve ever received.) I really love the women of the 90’s/2000’s and I really try to incorporate that sound into my music. I recently had my first sync placement in Netflix’s The Ultimatuim which was a top three highlight for 2024! Besides that, I’ve also grown a little bit of a reputation as the Friends girl, like, that’s my favorite show I definitely have written songs based off lines from the show. Some of my fans will always tag me in Friend’s meme’s and its like the best thing ever. Also, Rachel Green is my fashion icon and I replicate outfits for my shows. I also love golden retrievers and mine, Joey, will often make cameos in my videos.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Gosh there’s so many. Some of my favorite memories were when I was probably around 12 and during summer vacation, my siblings and I would stay up till 4 am playing Beatles Rockband. We would also do Just Dance and it always became a competition. I swear they would never count a move right when I did it.
