Rising Stars: Meet Marina Edwards of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marina Edwards

Hi Marina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have loved interior spaces and architecture as far back as I can remember. As a kid, I rearranged the furniture, styled bookshelves, and begged my parents to take me to the Pasadena Showcase House and real estate open houses. As I was starting my interior design studies at UCLA Extension, I found work as an interior design assistant at Craft Home Staging, a woman-owned and run home staging company in LA. During my years with the company, I learned about space planning, LA’s interior design vendors, and designer-client relations. In 2020, I founded Marina Edwards Interiors and began taking on residential interior design projects!

In 2021, I chose to deepen my design training and enrolled in a Master of Arts in Interior Design program in Paris, France. I spent the next 2 years running my LA-based design business remotely from Paris while studying interior architecture in a city steeped in historic design, architecture, furniture making, and antiques. This training honed my technical skills and deepened my appreciation for artisan trades.

Over the years, my projects have grown and developed in scope to include interior architecture, renovations, and new construction. Marina Edwards Interiors is now a bi-continental design firm, servicing in-person projects in LA and Paris and remote design projects globally, currently including the US, EU, and Canada.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Growing a company as an entrepreneur has its challenges, but the path has been exciting and rewarding. Managing a company in two time zones takes determination and problem-solving, that’s for sure! This way of working has deepened my relationship with my clients and has proven that where there’s a will, there’s a way. Ultimately, the ability to offer my clients a global approach to design with access to the world’s best vendors, domestic and foreign, is a reward that pays off.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My commitment is to functional design that is versatile, elevated, and tailored to the lifestyles of the people who inhabit these spaces. I aim for a harmonious blend of laid-back Californian ease and refined European sophistication. My designs often showcase layered and intimate lighting and utilize natural materials that reflect the seamless integration of indoor/outdoor living that California is known for. I gravitate towards rich, earthy color palettes punctuated by bold, intentional accents. I also love a mix of old and new! Taking a sensory approach to each project requires inquiring and emphasizing how environments make my clients feel, in addition to the aesthetic result.

What’s next?
While my love of interiors is rooted in residential design, I am also being called to explore the world of boutique hospitality. Having already consulted on several luxury Airbnb projects, the mix between the intimacy of residential design and the unique playfulness of travel hospitality is exciting and limitless with possibility!
