Rising Stars: Meet Lia Mangassarian of La Crescenta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lia Mangassarian.

Hi Lia, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Growing up, I watched my parents build and run different businesses, so entrepreneurship always felt like a natural path for me. My dad, for example, has been importing Italian products for over 40 years, and in the last few years he expanded into gelato, even offering a mobile gelato cart. When I had kids of my own and started planning parties, I realized how much goes into creating a great event. I saw an opportunity to bring something unique and memorable-high-quality desserts-into that space. That’s what led me to start catering gelato for events.
Our first event was for a close friend’s daughter, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. From there, demand grew quickly through word of mouth, and it really took off.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any business, we’ve had our share of growing pains-everything from equipment issues, like the gelato cart not turning on, to logistical challenges like car trouble, battery failures before events, and even inventory shortages. But those experiences forced me to become very solution-oriented and prepared. I’ve learned to build backup plans, double-check equipment, and stay calm under pressure, especially when issues come up right before an event. Each challenge has made me more resilient and better at running the business, and it’s really strengthened my ability to problem-solve and deliver a great experience no matter the circumstances.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re Mangelato, a gelato catering company that serves authentic Italian gelato at events like weddings, bridal showers, birthdays, and even movie premieres. What really sets us apart is the quality of our product. Our gelato is imported directly from Italy every month and made with clean, natural ingredients-no preservatives or artificial additives. It’s crafted on a farm where they use fresh milk from their own cows, which really speaks to the authenticity and quality. I’m especially proud of that because a lot of dessert vendors offer more mass-produced products, whereas we’re bringing something unique and elevated. On top of that, our gelato cart adds a really elegant, eye-catching element to events, so it’s not just dessert—it’s part of the experience.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Most of our bookings come through Instagram, where customers can view our work, see past events, and reach out directly to inquire or secure a date.
