Rising Stars: Meet Jahmall Marshall

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I always liked rap, from before when I was a kid my cousins would rap over instrumentals on our front porch groups like mob deep, the lox and ruff ryders that was the energy. I mimicked them a lot but when I made my first song was in high school, my friends were doing it and I jumped on the mic too, at first I was terrible I didn’t know how engineering worked but my friends like my lyrics so they motivated me to keep going to have “fun” with it and from there I started to rap.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Well for starters nothing should be easy and what I mean by that you have to go through some type of hardship or resolve so you could even look back on it as an experience. They were a lot of struggles down to my recording experience and my sound. I from Queens where everything is a constant there’s so much going around it’s always changing. I have so much influences so it was hard to figure out what style of music I want to make or what route I should go I was lost.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On the other side of things, I like to draw I always wanted to make comic books but, music is what I’ve been focused on for a while. I’m proud I was able to complete a body of work because most of the stuff I do I put off till the next day or I never pick it back up. Music allows me to say what I want whenever I want. I feel like it’s a timestamp for whatever is on my mind and to be able to reflect on it is the best part.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Yeah, I’d like to thank my team self protected we’re a collective based in NYC Queens. We been through so much and we’ve got more in store for the world to see. I’d always like to thank my Producer and creative consultants Bobs Beats and Enfluence for pushing me along the way
