Today we’d like to introduce you to Gianluca Lattuada.
Gianluca, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I take this opportunity to briefly tell you what is behind my art: I weave stories in the form of fables, crafting a world rich in fantasy and symbolism. Throughout history, fables and myths have been vessels for tales about realities and mysteries beyond our understanding. Each fable, with its unique aesthetic, provides an engaging experience while conveying metaphors or meanings for everyday life.
My aim is to capture the unconscious, emotions, fears, and energy of individuals and society, often using animals as recurring elements in my works. These animal characters serve as mirrors for human qualities, showcasing virtues and flaws alike. For example, a group of dogs might effectively represent individuals in a city like L.A. and in contemporary society. A stray dog could symbolize someone psychologically detached due to mental, social, or economic discomfort, while a pack of hunting dogs might represent a criminal gang or a group of friends celebrating companionship.
Everything begins with the intention of explaining what each person feels inside and to paint a portrait of the society we live in, evoking emotions and prompting reflection.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Creating art today is both the easiest and most challenging endeavor simultaneously. Thanks to social media, connecting with a large audience, even those at a distance, has become more accessible by regularly updating them on your work and providing glimpses behind the scenes — something that was considerably more challenging in the past. On the flip side, we live in a much more complex world where it is necessary to study extensively and make a significant effort to maintain authenticity and genuineness in what one does. To navigate this world effectively, it’s essential to possess two sets of eyes: one directed outward to comprehend the happenings around us, and another turned inward to explore the profound depths within each of us.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
In each of my residency and exhibition projects, the artworks emerge from research intertwined with traditions, culture, and the specific location they will inhabit. It’s crucial that the artworks narrate the essence of the place while engaging in a dialogue with their surroundings. For instance, in the August 2023 exhibition at the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya in Mexico, I showcased a collection of works painted during my residency in Yucatan. Each piece reflected an aspect linked to pre-Hispanic and Mexican culture and society.
Another aspect that inspires my daily work is creating murals in abandoned places. It’s a means to revive these locations through art while relishing the freedom to create and experiment. When you’re there, facing a large blank wall, alone, your brain starts thinking differently. It’s not the same as a canvas. The workspace, the size, and the energy in these places prompt a distinct approach to your work. It’s very challenging but incredibly rewarding.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I recognize myself in this ancient proverb: “Luck doesn’t exist; there’s only the moment when talent meets opportunity.” I believe achieving goals comes from constant practice and being ready to seize every chance that comes your way. Real luck today, in my opinion, is having the gift of seeing an opportunity where most people don’t – and this holds true in art as well as in business.
