Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniele Carretta.
Hi Daniele, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I studied at the Conservatory and I graduated in Organ and Harpsichord, but I also studied Composition during the organ courses. So, I can say that I have a “classical” music background.
Nevertheless, I always wanted to find another way to reach, musically speaking, as much people as possible, because music is emotion. And if I share the emotion with others, the emotion itself grows.
I thought, and I still do now, that cinema is one of the best ways to achieve this goal. Films can be watched by so many people, a film tells a story…and with the music I can literally get into that story. I simply consider this something extraordinary!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Ouch, so many obstacles! I had been lucky at the beginning, because I was at the right place at the right time: I met a film director who was looking for a composer and I got my first serious gig! But it isn’t a smooth road, because you have to deal with so many “No, thanks…we are all set” and “Thank you, we’ll save your information for future reference”. Unfortunately you’ll be familiar with that kind of responses. So, sometimes you could think: “Am I a good musician? Am I a good composer? Maybe I was wrong when I thought that I could do that?”.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve always been a creative. I cannot think of myself without art and creativity. Since my childhood I wanted to me a musician and the dream come true. I play classical music and I compose music for film, video and multimedia projects.
It’s hard to say what I like most about music but the possibility – composing music – to create something unique is just wonderful. Because when you play a Sonata from a classical composer you give your interpretation, nevertheless the same sonata has been played by so many other musicians. But when you compose…well, you create something that nobody else can do. Not because you are the best one, because the artistic creation is exclusive by definition instead.
I’m proud of being a film composer, I have to say that. I was already around my 30s when I started working on films but I have been able to get some awards. So yes, I’m proud of have been capable of it.
If you are a creative, a film director, producer or if you are simply curious please get in touch! I’d love to be in touch with you.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I think that the secret is only one: believe in yourself. I know, that’s not a secret at all…everybody tells that, everybody tells the same.
But that’s true. That’s why we always hear “believe in yourself”.
So, nothing new?
Everything is new, indeed. Because we are all different, we have to give every time a new meaning to that statement. It’s not just thinking “I can do it – I can do that…”; no, “believe in yourself” means be strong and be stronger than the obstacles you’ll find on your way.
