Rising Stars: Meet Barbara Horvat of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Horvat

Hi Barbara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was 7 when I was on the stage for the first time. This is one of my strongest and clearest memories from childhood. I was signed up for theatre classes because “I had trouble making friends” according to teachers. I didn’t think much of it until I was on the stage for the first time. I remember seeing the audience with the corner of my eye and how much emotion the show evoked in them. In that moment something moved in me and I said to myself “This is it, this is what I want to do. I want to make people FEEL something.”
I spent next decade of my life watching TV shows and movies and “documenting” actors from credits in my little notebook. I don’t know why, I just felt it was important I know their names.
When I was 15 I decided I will one day live in Los Angeles and ALSO be a part of the magical world of filmmaking. I wanted to go to a school there so I picked up summer jobs and started saving up. Coming from a small country (Slovenia) saving up money was very difficult. But when I was 19 I picked up several jobs and worked as much as I could. At 23 I moved to Los Angeles and my dreams came true – I went to my dream school in my dream city. After that nothing was the same ever again. I fell deeply in love with the craft of acting, cinematography and writing. I spent nearly every waking second immersed in this world. And if the stars align, I hope to achieve a career in this world one day.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle was being so far away from home. That is still the hardest part. Saying goodbye to our family dog, my mom, my sister, my friends. It saddens me I can’t be there for their biggest moments. Since I’m 9 time zones away the commute back and forth is quite long. I think me being so far brought us all so much closer.

The next one has been financial aspect of it. It’s very overwhelming sometimes to balance all the incomes you need to exist in this city and not really knowing where the next paycheck comes from. But I have to be honest – it’s also part of the fun. It taught me how to manage my finance and become VERY creative in my survival methods 😀

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I call myself a “creative individual”. I am an actress, writer, content creator, filmmaker,… I love creating something out of nothing and I feel immense passion for creating imaginary worlds that speak to people and/or make them laugh.

My favorite thing in the world is when someone says they were inspired by my work or it made them laugh and forget about their troubles for a bit. To me that is an incredible honor because I know how highly I value those who inspire me. I am very grateful to be at a point in my life where people feel like they can share their stories and life experiences with me.

I do my best to be as honest and transparent as I can in everything I do and everyone I meet, no matter what others will think of me. I have no issue making a fool out of myself in the name of humor. I think that comes through in my skits and it makes people let their guard down around me. I don’t take life too seriously and I always look on the bright side of life.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Authenticity, resilience, passion, taking actions out of love not fear, mindset is everything, being human.
