Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Freebairn-Smith.
Hi Alison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My father was a composer/arranger, as well as a group singer, so music was very prominent in our house. I began composing on the piano at six and started writing songs when I was nine. My sisters and I were always singing around the house and I was in the chorus at school, so music was always a part of my life.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like most families, my family suffered the repercussions of generational trauma which led to emotional disorders in several family members. No one got out unscathed, but as the empath of the family, I was definitely targeted. As a result, I spent my youth in survival mode, which kept me from building the future that was, otherwise, very much within my reach. However, I’m making up for a lost time, now. Thanks to some very supportive people, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to let your light shine and reclaim your true calling.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have supported myself from a young age, working mostly behind the scenes in the music business, although my first job had me traveling the country, doing marketing for a travel company before I was even old enough to rent a car! I’ve promoted a lot of other artists, done publicity for several music organizations, and worked as a music supervisor on a film. I was fortunate to have worked for legendary songwriter/recording artist, Carole King, and another pioneer in the world of scoring for film and television, Shirley Walker. I learned so much during those years, but was still hiding behind someone else, afraid to show my own talents. Now, a video of me singing one of my original songs has gone viral with nearly 6 million views and I continue to receive beautiful messages from people all over the world who are moved by my songs and even like my singing voice!
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
It’s not always easy to find people who want to help you get to the next level in your career. Sometimes people assume that if you’ve got the goods, you don’t need their help. Then there are those who wield their power over you, thinking they stand to gain something by keeping you hungry. What I’ve learned is that the squeakiest wheel gets the grease. And, thanks to all the lovely people around the globe who have sent me heartfelt messages, I’ve learned that if you don’t answer your calling, you are not only denying yourself, you are denying everyone around you the joy that comes with real connection with others.
