Rising Stars: Meet Alexandra Nissing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Nissing.

Hi Alexandra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a senior in High School when I got a job as a receptionist at a salon in Toluca Lake. I always loved the salon environment, even as a kid I would go with my sisters to get their hair done, and I was mesmerized. Working in the salon, I quickly realized it was an industry I could thrive in. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place, at the right time. I was offered an apprenticeship with the owner of the salon, Tamara.

I studied under her for two years as her assistant, while attending beauty school. She molded me into an independent stylist and taught me the ins and outs of the business side. Finances, inventory, marketing, you name it. To her, I am forever grateful. I stayed at her salon for about 7 years, and when I felt like I had gained all I could from that experience, I moved to Encino, where my salon is located now. I was welcomed into Butterfly Loft Salon U-Bungalows (now Salon Republic Encino) with open arms. Making the switch from a traditional salon to a suite was nerve-wracking at first, but completely worth it. I share a two-station suite with Elise Melnick (@hairbyelm) and she has been another huge mentor and inspiration in my career. Tamara, being Vidal Sassoon trained, taught me all of the fundamentals of being a great hairstylist. Elise, with her amazing skill in creative colors, and coloring in general, showed me a whole new side to the art. I strongly believe we are products of our environment and I am truly blessed to be surrounded by such talented, renowned women in the industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No one tells you how hard it is to have your own business, and I learn something new every day. I am always striving to be better. Being an independent stylist, and building a solid clientele is so much more work than I was prepared for. I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but even 10 years into the business, it’s something that is always at the top of my priorities. There have been plenty of moments where I’ve felt like giving up and changing careers. Feeling like I’m not good enough, I’m never going to be completely booked out, etc. Sadly, the pandemic threw a huge wrench into the gears of this industry. Being shut down on and off for nearly two years absolutely took a toll. But I stick with it because I love it. I love making people feel good about themselves. It’s such a rewarding career and definitely worth overcoming the obstacles.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My main focuses are cut and color. Men AND women. Men’s grooming was my first love in this career. Funny, men’s haircuts were the thing I was most terrified of in the beginning. Then one day it all just clicked and I absolutely love and thrive in it. I might actually have more male clients than female, most of which have been with me since day one. When it comes to color, I love it all, but blondes and reds are my current favorites and most requested. It’s hard to choose a favorite between the two services. Cutting has an instant gratification aspect that is so satisfying. Color is always a process, but it’s amazing how you can completely transform someone’s look within a few hours. I am proud to be able to offer both services, as you may know, many stylists only specialize in cut or color. Being a woman that specializes in men’s grooming definitely sets me apart from most other stylists I know. In addition, I often get referred to as an “unlicensed therapist” by my clients. Sitting in my chair is more than a hair appointment. It’s a safe space to be yourself, tell me about yourself, the good and the bad. No judgment, just support. And at the end of your session, you’ll feel better inside, and out.
