Mikayla Gutierrez shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Mikayla, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something outside of work that has brought me joy recently has been my friends and sisters, getting to watch the people I love grow into their adult lives
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mikayla Gutierrez, I am a tattoo artist, painter and muralist in Central Valley, California. I work with an amazing team of artists at Body Art Gallery, in Tulare, California. What makes our studio so special is that it provides an outlet for endless creative possibility. I am very thankful that the consistency of my tattoo career has allowed me to branch into other avenues, like mural jobs for local businesses and diving into my personal paintings.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
A part of myself that has served its purpose in my life has been the act of making myself small in order to make other people around me happy. I am ready to release the parts of myself that have learned to shrink to stay out of the way of others.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
When I started painting 🙂
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
Painting a solid portfolio, even if it takes me a lifetime
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
Absolutely. These are the days where I’m waking up to the sun shining through our stained glass windows, starting my day with a cup of coffee and an hour of painting before heading to the the tattoo shop. When I get there, I’m fed, and all of my coworkers are there having a good time with me. We joke around and share lunch. These are the most peaceful, satisfying days for me
