Meredith Quill of Downtown Los Angeles on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Meredith Quill. Check out our conversation below.

Meredith , it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
I wake up pretty early, around 6:30, and prep breakfast for my 3 kids. I scramble for the next hour to get everyone out the door to school on time, and once everyone is out of the house, I take a 2 mile walk through the neighborhood. Best 30 minutes of my day.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is MEREDITH QUILL and I’m the founder/designer at Becket + Quill, a Los Angels based jewelry brand.. We hand make all of our beaded jewelry in downtown Los Angeles, and we have an accessible price point because we think everyone deserves a little sparkle. I am deeply inspired by my mom and my grandmothers who were all jewelry lovers, and I make every piece with an eye towards the classic, elegant jewelry that they adored. Right now I am gearing up for holiday season, which is the busiest time of year, so I am prepping for pop ups and making inventory for the holidays.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My mom was my biggest champion and cheerleader. She was always telling me that my creative endeavors were worthwhile and she truly loved all of my work.

When did you last change your mind about something important?
In regards to work, I decided about 2 years ago to only make jewelry that I loved and not what was “trending”. For a time, I was trying to be everything to everyone, and it didn’t work. I decided that I was only going to create pieces that I wanted to wear, and not worry about what other brands were doing.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My daughters have excellent taste and I talk to them about my business all the time. I ask them to test pieces out for me and I ask them to weigh in on pieces that I’m creating. They are very honest and are extremely helpful.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Are you tap dancing to work? Have you been that level of excited at any point in your career? If so, please tell us about those days.
I truly love what I do. 1o years into making jewelry, and I am still so excited when I come up with a new piece to make or find a beautiful stone or strand of beads. And I am much more confident in my taste now than I was when I first started.
