Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoë Kahn.
Hi Zoë, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a psychotherapist in both a private practice and community mental health capacity for 15 years. As an undergraduate at Boston University I became fascinated by psychology and knew very early on that this was where I wanted to focus my time and energy. After I graduated in 2008, I took a year to work for AmeriCorps in Boston, where I helped middle school students strengthen their reading and writing skills. Although the program was focused on literacy, I started noticing that many of the students really attended our aftercare program to get connection and care from safe adults. Students began to ask me to drive them home after school so they could talk with me about what was happening in their lives, wanting support and someone they could talk to about issues in their lives. It was at this time that I realized I had a gift and passion for providing support and connection to others. I decided to get my masters in clinical social work so that I could go into private practice some day. Following graduate school I worked in community mental health clinics as well as private practice settings providing individual and couples therapy for children and adults. In 2016 I became licensed and opened up my own practice which has been the most rewarding experience in my career. I currently see individuals and couples both in-person in South Pasadena, CA as well as virtually throughout California.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest struggle along the way was definitely gaining the 3200 hours of experience required to become licensed in California. During this time, I worked in community mental health clinics often for pretty rigorous hours. There were times when I really wanted to give up or felt like it would never happen for me but I’m glad that I decided to keep going and continued to push myself to stay on the course. It was worth the long hours!
We’ve been impressed with Zoë Kahn Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in working with couples and am trained in EFT (Core Skills). I absolutely love couples work and feel very passionate about helping couples learn how to be vulnerable with each other and increase emotional connection and safety in their relationships. I see myself as helping couples take risks in emotional vulnerability with each other in session so that they build up the confidence to take those risks outside of session. When I see couples putting in the commitment to work on their relationships and watching it pay off when they work through conflict together I feel inspired!
I also socialize in providing ADHD therapy for adults. As a neurodivergent psychotherapist, I can offer a special type of support for those who may be processing a recent diagnosis. I often use Internal Family Systems (IFS) and meditation practices to help guide us as we explore what it might bring up for someone to learn about their diagnosis later in life.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the culture of our city. We have so much diversity when it comes to food, art, and entertainment. LA draws some of the most creative people from all over the world and as citizens we get to experience it easily when we go out. I love that in just 20-30 minutes drive I can go have a completely different experience from the one I might be having at home. Coming from a small city, I don’t ever take that for granted.
I like the car culture of LA the least. I really struggle with not having easy access to subways or trains to get around our sprawling city. It would be amazing to be able to get around to different parts of the city to explore new neighborhoods and districts.
Pricing:
- While I don’t take insurance, I do offer a superbill (an invoice for our services that you can provide to your health insurance provider). Many PPO insurance plans offer to cover at least a portion of out of network costs. As always, it’s recommended to check with your insurance provider first to see what your benefits are.
