Meet Yuki Shundo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yuki Shundo.

YUKI SHUNDO

Yuki, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into the world of entertainment began in Japan, where I was born and raised. As a teenager, I found myself drawn to the vibrant energy of American pop culture, particularly music and dance. Despite it not being the prevailing trend at the time, I was captivated by US music and live performances, spending countless hours glued to the television, mesmerized by the choreography and performances of my favorite artists.

Fueled by this passion, I decided to pursue a career in the entertainment industry, opting to move to Los Angeles at the age of 19. It was a bold leap into the unknown, but it marked the beginning of an incredible adventure. In LA, I immersed myself in intensive training at renowned dance studios such as Edge, Debbie Reynolds, and Millennium Dance Complex, honing my skills and perfecting my craft.

Through perseverance and dedication, I secured opportunities as a dancer and performer, working alongside esteemed choreographers and lending my talents to various projects. However, it was during this time that I discovered my own creative voice and started to explore choreography independently.

As my choreographic work gained recognition, doors began to open, leading to my first professional gig as a choreographer and eventually a teaching position at the prestigious IDA Hollywood studio.

With my reputation expanding both in the US and Japan, I diversified my portfolio, venturing into the realm of creative direction and choreography for commercials and live events. Notably, my work with an idol group earned me the “Best Performance” Award in Taiwan, further cementing my reputation as a visionary in the field.

Driven by a relentless passion for creativity, I continued to push boundaries, exploring new avenues of artistic expression. This led me to venture into music, where I discovered a newfound sense of fulfillment as a singer-songwriter. Drawing upon my background in dance and choreography, I approach music with a keen focus on rhythm, emotion, and storytelling, aiming to create immersive experiences that resonate with audiences.

Today, dance remains my roots, while music has become my life’s passion. Whether I’m choreographing a performance, directing a show, or crafting a song, I approach each endeavor with unwavering dedication, constantly striving to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation. For me, the stage is not just a platform for expression—it’s a canvas where dreams come to life and where I continue to write the next chapter of my story.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in the entertainment industry had its share of challenges. Moving to Los Angeles and establishing myself wasn’t easy. I faced doubts about whether I could make it in such a competitive field. Breaking into dance and choreography meant enduring long hours of training, auditions, and setbacks.

Financial stability was another hurdle. Freelancing in entertainment meant dealing with unpredictable work and income. Juggling multiple roles as a creative director and singer-songwriter required tight time management.

Despite these challenges, I learned to stay resilient and adaptable. Each obstacle taught me valuable lessons and strengthened my passion for my craft. Overcoming them has shaped me into the artist I am today.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In my work as a dancer, choreographer, and creative director, I focus on blending music and movement to tell compelling stories. What sets me apart is my keen attention to musicality and lyrics. I believe every sound matters, and I ensure that each beat and lyric is reflected in the choreography. This approach allows me to create performances that resonate deeply with audiences, whether I’m directing and choreographing for shows, music videos, or commercials. One of my proudest achievements is winning the “Best Performance” Award in Taiwan for my work with an idol group. I’m driven by a passion for artistic expression and a commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity in everything I do.

Working as a dancer with celebrities like Justin Bieber, Sean Kingston, etc., has been a valuable learning experience, providing unforgettable moments.

In my music creation, I also emphasize authenticity, focusing on expressing who I am and what I can uniquely bring to the table.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I really love about Los Angeles is its crazy cultural vibe and the mix of people you find here. From hipster hangouts to classic Hollywood spots, there’s always something cool happening. Plus, the food scene is just amazing. You can find anything from street tacos to fancy rooftop restaurants.

I love the weather! Most days, it’s like living in perpetual sunshine. Perfect for hitting the beach or just enjoying around the neighborhood under the sun.

But I gotta be real; traffic in LA can be a nightmare sometimes. It feels like you spend half your life sitting in your car! And don’t get me started on finding parking downtown. Also, with the city growing so fast, finding affordable housing can be a real struggle for a lot of folks.

Overall, though, LA has this energy that’s hard to beat. It’s got its quirks and challenges, but there’s nowhere else quite like it.
