Meet Xing (Angel) Gao and Emmery Chang of Nine O’Clock Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Xing (Angel) Gao, Emmery Chang.

Xing (Angel) and Emmery, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
We started this business because of the outbreak of COVID-19. Our home country, China, as well as the country we’re living in, the United States, and many other countries have suffered in countless ways and are still suffering today. Watching the number of cases rise every day, we knew we had to do something for the community and make the world a better place.

We came up with this idea to start a small retail business because both of us LOVE to buy accessories to change up our everyday look. We want to share how accessories can boost people’s moods while benefiting the community. Being a 100% student-run business, our mission is to raise awareness for global health issues and to help people live healthy and productive lives. All of the proceeds from our sales go to the non-profit organization we also created, Nine O’Clock Corp, which donates essential medical supplies to local hospitals.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road. One of the major struggles was looking for a manufacturer that satisfies our standard of quality and budget. Some of the big manufacturers have higher minimum quantity requirements, which was difficult for us since we just started the business.

Because we are both new to starting a business, some other obstacles we faced were figuring out our marketing strategies, filing our company with the state secretary, and balancing between schoolwork and the business.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nine O’Clock Studio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Something that made us stand out from others is that we are a student-run business and that we have a clearly defined mission to raise awareness for global health issues and to help people live healthy and productive lives.

In other words, we are not seeking financial gains for personal use in starting this business, but rather we are using the business as a catalyst for positive change during such an uncertain time.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Something we like best about Los Angeles is that it is a place that provides opportunities for people with dreams, and its diverse population gives us a broad view of the world. The LA people are easygoing and inspiring, the vibe is just amazing for those of us who seek to make positive change for our communities and are willing to work hard toward this goal.

What we like the least about the city is the traffic and the weather.
