Meet Ximena Vasquez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ximena Vasquez.

Ximena Vasquez

Hi Ximena, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Guatemala, where the vibrant culture and artistic atmosphere fueled my love for art. At the age of 15, I embarked on a new chapter by moving to the United States with my family. As I entered the workforce, I found my way into the creative world, securing a role as a fashion stylist assistant at Nike Icon Studio in 2022.

While working in the exciting world of fashion, I couldn’t shake the feeling of a void within me. Painting, a lifelong passion, continued to call out to me. Balancing the demands of my job and the challenges of pursuing art in Los Angeles, I persisted in honing my skills. However, a pivotal moment last year prompted deep reflection on my happiness and fulfillment.

This introspection led me to immerse myself further in painting, discovering a profound sense of joy and satisfaction in creating art. Fueled by this newfound passion, I made the bold decision this year to transition into a full-time artist. Simultaneously, I co-founded ‘Momos’ with my sister, a Latin food pop-up that launched in September 2023.

‘Momos’ is not just a culinary venture but a heartfelt tribute to our grandparents, Moly and Momo. Their love for food and celebration served as the inspiration behind this flavorful endeavor. Each recipe crafted is a homage to our heritage, carrying forward their legacy and offering a taste of our cultural richness to the world.

In embracing both my artistic calling and my culinary roots, I have found a harmonious balance that brings me immense fulfillment. My journey from Guatemala to the United States, from the fashion world to the realm of art and culinary entrepreneurship, reflects a continual pursuit of passion and authenticity.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. From the very beginning, learning to speak English at the age of 15 presented a significant challenge. I navigated high school by translating everything from English to Spanish and back again, adding an extra layer of difficulty to my academic journey. Despite the hurdles, I managed to achieve multiple recognitions at school and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, which was no easy feat.

Entering the workforce posed its own set of challenges, particularly in securing a job without facing judgment for being different. Overcoming negativity and navigating an environment where some people attempted to undermine my efforts was a demanding aspect of my journey.

Transitioning into the art world brought yet another layer of complexity, given its highly competitive nature. As an immigrant daring to dream, I still face real challenges in establishing myself and finding my place within the industry.

Being an artist may not seem as impactful as being a doctor, but for me, it goes beyond the canvas. I see myself as a reflection, a mirror, and a source of empowerment for my community. Despite the struggles, I am committed to pursuing my passion and making a difference in my own way. I am doing this for myself, as well as for the community I aim to inspire and uplift.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist who works across various mediums, with a particular affinity for acrylic painting. My focus lies in portraying women as simultaneously strong and vulnerable, delving into the emotional journey they navigate. I take pride in challenging the societal notion that strength and vulnerability are mutually exclusive.

In each painting, my goal is to depict the strength found in vulnerability. I believe that a woman who embraces both aspects of her nature is mindful of her words and delivers her truth with care.

While conveying the harmonious coexistence of sensitivity and strength, my art serves as a reminder that these qualities contribute to the rich tapestry of the human journey. Personally, as a strong yet sensitive woman, I use the full spectrum of emotions as steppingstones to grow stronger, emerge resilient, and feel empowered.

I am most proud of consistently following my heart and staying true to myself, regardless of external opinions or judgments. What sets me apart from others is my unwavering commitment to authenticity and individuality. I prioritize my own values and beliefs, allowing them to guide my actions and decisions, even in the face of societal expectations or criticism. This dedication to staying true to who I am enables me to navigate my own path and embrace the uniqueness that sets me apart.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, my childhood was shaped by a unique blend of circumstances. With my mom working extensively and my dad living in the US, I spent my formative years under the care of my grandparents. I was inherently shy, introverted, and sensitive – personality traits that still resonate with me today.

One of my earliest and fondest memories revolves around my love for art. I enjoyed drawing and painting with my cousins on their patio whenever I accompanied my grandparents to visit them. Living with my grandparents felt like living in a mini-zoo – we had two dogs, various types of birds, squirrels, a cat, fish, turtles, and an abundance of flowers and plants. The diverse array of animals added a touch of magic to my upbringing.

Despite my introverted nature, I cherished moments spent in my own world or with my grandma. She became my closest companion and mentor. As my grandma lost her sight when I was young, I became, in a way, her eyes. Our bond was extraordinary, and she embodied purity like an angel from heaven. Cooking together and sharing conversations over coffee in the kitchen are memories that I hold dear. She instilled in me, from a young age, the importance of family and the value of being a blessing in someone’s life.

Today, I aspire to emulate the kindness and warmth that defined my grandmother. My grandparents’ influence has left an indelible mark on me, shaping my values and the way I approach life.
